it was hot ... well, 89* here in the loft, considerably cooler outdoors under the oaks

chicks were hanging around with their beaks open, drinking water like crazy then snuggling in the cooler loose dusty dirt under the shade of the tarp over the run

I let them out to truly free-range (supervised by DH and me, watched carefully but apprehensively by Krispy-the-cat) a couple times today -- cannot stay out there with them that long (about 45 minutes max) .. but I felt any aerial predators would be at much higher altitudes, and the ground-bound ones would be staying in the coolest spots they could find

did not hear any hawk screams ... usually they are a counterpoint to all the neighborhood noises

tomorrow if it's this hot again, I'm putting ice cubes in their waterer

oh, I got another BLUE egg today ! I think from Anitra but could have been Phoebe ... Dierdre spent some time in the nest box but no egg from her (hers are green) ... at least not yet and I don't think they lay eggs this late in the evening

eggs seem to show up around 3 to 5 PM so far ....

Dierdre was waddling in an awkward way and looked "fat", but I couldn't feel any mass or bulging to her under side nor sides, so I'm not sure what's happening, could be another double yolker under way

Obviously you have never been to/around or through Tonasket. We have no pet store - maybe at the feed store. We have no animal rescue. None of the local vets are licensed for wildlife (a robin is wildlife) and won't take it. I don't know if you (Danielle) could get ahold of The vets that used to run (can't think of their names this second - Don Lay?) the clinic on East Side - Animal Hospital (before they sold to Carol Downing)....anyway....they are the only locals licensed to take in wildlife. Oh, also....The closest Pet Smart or Petco is 2 hours away....well 2.5 for Tonasket. Sorry....I just got a good laugh from this as we are so out in the sticks. I mean no harm.

Yeah, I guess that would be a problem huh?

I am kinda used to having things within about 15 min to no more than 45 min away. I feel like I live way out because of the neighborhood wich every house around me has 4-5 acres, but if I need something it is not really that far away. I have never lived in the "real" sticks!

And I have only been by the exit sign to go to Tonasket, not actually to Tonasket. Maybe one of these days......well probably not unless I was visiting "someone".

Yeah, DON'T any of you people over Tanasket way or down south hold your breath waiting for KIM to come your way

I can't even get her to come the five miles to my house UNLESS I bribe her with cookies and Donuts and a Diet Root Beer

It was a cheer at the football game. It's how I learned to spell Tonasket when I was 10.
The last football game I went to there, actually... and I caught the mumps, too.
A very memorable game!

It was so warm today we decided to use the last of our raspberries to make a batch of raspberry ice cream. DH just decided to dish some up. A nice way to finish up a nice hot day! Yippee!

Yes it was a great nice warm and dry day. I have a high of 106* on one thermo. I think it is a wee bit off due to being in the direct sun. But I did see 91 on one of the others. I tried to make the best of it got a bunch of mowing done and Made and delivered a bell and got some coop painting done too. Just hope we get more days like today but it will probably start raining too soon!!

The adult redtails and most of their young beat it for Eastern Washington as soon as the wheat harvest starts: easy pickings behind the combines. What gets left on this side are the youngest of the branchers, who are the main control over rabbits close to their nests; the adults don't hunt close in for most of the time they're feeding hatchlings, until the young are starting to fly and can be in on the kill.
