Add to the things which terrify Ian: fresh picked blackberries put in his food dish for a treat.

Do I have the only chicken in the world who's a picky eater?

Weird afternoon: a... not a friend, never friend, someone I went to preschool and nine grades of public school with, whose father went to school twelve years with my mother, whose grandfather took the herd of Jersey's off my grandmother's hands in payment for the feed bill when the Army gave her fifty cents an acre, seven dollars apiece for buildings and two weeks to get off the place in 1941 (a good thing, freeing her from debt and letting her buy a small place for her and her youngest four children, including my mom) has died. He teased me, bullied me, plagued my life until we moved down to Lacey, but it's weird to think he's gone.

Second death of a member of my class this year, but the first one was someone I knew had pancreatic cancer, so there wasn't the same shock to it.

I don't know if the link works, but a friend just posted this video of her daughter at the fair on Monday where she won grand champion in showmanship with her horse. My DD has been very good friends with her little brother since first grade (little kid crush - he brought her a heartshaped box of chocolates on Valentines Day in first grade instead of a little card like the other kids got). Their father died suddenly in his sleep 2 years ago to the day this video was shot; he was the same age as me and he had taken DD out on a little "date" with his boy not to long before. It's hard to believe someone who appeared to be strong and healthy could be gone just like that. Anyways, get your tissues ready before you watch.

Well, my daughter has decided that she would like to have a chicken of her own. This is my daughter with mild cerebral palsy who had the seizure in July. I think this would be wonderful for her and would get her outside every day. She really likes Silkies, so I am looking for a super sweet Silkie hen for her (can't have roos). She will not be able to chase it to catch it, so does anyone have one they would like to sell that is super friendly and likes to be held? Hubby is determined to get the coop done by Sunday so he can go fishing with his buddies on Monday. And I am hoping to put chickens in it on Monday! Yay!

My latest development: husband is being a total jerk about the chicks. He doesn't want them in the laundry room. He's whining about it being a health risk and says they smell (hardly).

Anyway...we do have a small shed. I moved some things around and will be able to fit the brooder in there. One problem is that there's a decent-sized hole at the bottom of one wall, and I told him he's got to fix it first. But I'm worried about the night temps outside. Will one red heat lamp (250 watt I believe) keep them warm enough? The trough is only about a foot high - should I make something out of cardboard to go higher around it? It was never my intention to move them out so early, but DH evidentally never realized they'd be inside and is having a hissy fit.
