I need to get in touch with the junior chicken whisperer to see if he has a small incubator I can borrow to incubate the rest of the eggs: the people up the hill are all overwhelmed with soccer season.

drat, we need someone else with a handy broody .... I don't have an incubator (just the materials to make one

don't think I have the patience to monitor an incubator anyway -- and no, I'm not going to carry any eggs around in my bra either

Oh my goodness...what a trying afternoon. You'd think I was having babies!

I have wanted to reach under her to see what is going on so many times! But I have been a good girl - and even forced myself to leave for a while LOL

Here's what I know for sure:

One little chick - wondering what all the noise is! (Me!)

Two little chicks - mama was calling to eat - I adore that sound!!!

Four little chicks? (Candi - one of the shells is khaki, one is slightly spotted green, and two of the more olive green, none with names)

I saw at least one egg that has not zipped yet.

So exciting

Will keep you all up-to-date!

olive green eggs are Becky's ... she's fluffy .... khaki could also be Becky's or could be Anitra's, who usually lays green but sometimes it's pale and almost khaki (she's fluffy too)

that green one is pointed on the end so must be Deirdre's

okay, that's four of the seven I think she still had under her .... started with nine, right? one exploded, one got broken

I may have fed my pullets too much oyster shell, those shells are THICK, and Dana found that two of the ones she had, had fully developed chicks who peeped but never zipped

now that first little chick in the picture, is the same color Ginger was as a chick ... she grew to be a pretty mahogany-gold

the second chick seems to have more silver-gray markings than mine did originally ... I'll have to get DH to show me where he transferred the pictures onto his computer (he somehow LOST the camera ... )

Julia, sent you a PM about who lays which eggs ... but recall the roo is silver duckwing with Columbian (at least that's the way it seems, based on the appearance of the chicks hatched so far )

so for any of the eggs you hatch, you might get gold or silver (duckwing), possibly even blue; many of them will have a teal or purple metallic sheen to their "black" hackle feathers, which may be gold-laced

Christina, Anitra, Becky, and Ginger have muffs and beards; Phoebe and Deirdre are clean-faced with more black on their heads (as a chick, Deirdre had a black teardrop mark below her eye, thus her name ... )

Morning.
Very tired today. Did our volunteer work at the Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Ctr yesterday. DH & I do it every year.
Then when we got home worked some more on prepping for paint in the nursery.

Today we will get the second coat on the ceiling and paint the trim. Then will primer the walls. Don't think we'll have time to paint the first coat on the walls today- maybe next weekend.

Oh, & all the paints are no VOC so I can be a part of helping.

I overslept, and am getting my various computer updates and tasks taken care of so I can watch football with Bruce today

bad night for the dog, multiple seizures, we will have to think about some sort of "containment" for him, since our great-room carpet is now befouled with everything that sprayed around during his episodes

looks like we will have to replace the whole thing, I don't know if the enzyme cleaners will take care of THIS !

outside is not an option, unfortunately; he barks nonstop when locked out of the house, and neighbors will not put up with that -- they are okay with chickens but not repetitive barking

actually we may be getting another dog; DS has a friend who must give up her shorthair pointer (young spayed female) because the place she's living suddenly changed rules and no longer allows pets (she's in a small town, not many places available to rent); someone else has been caretaking but that person is being deployed

will have to go spread towels all over the room so that we can walk through it ...

meanwhile I am so happy that chickens are doing well, that eggs are hatcvhing and chicks peeping; eager to see what Dawn's broody will show off when she's ready to move them out

Good morning! What a day already! Had to bypass 4 downed trees, one of them shut down the main road out of my area!

Though luckily no wind damage here as far as I can tell. Went out to my barn job and found a rather large cedar had broken off at the top and landed on the perimeter fenceline again... Thanks goodness there are 3 indevidual pastures there... Or the poor things would be stuck in the barn all day... I'll do further damage control up there after the winds have passed. Its still quite litterally howling outside.

Finally rehomed both of my un-needed roos last night!

They are going to a flock of their own, so no stew pot for them!

So I am now down to the Wheaten and splash ameraucana roos.
