I think she meant that she doesn't want them to die by bleeding, like the way people slit their throats while they are in killing cones and let them bleed to death.

I do have to say, that does seem like a slow way to die. Sounds kind of brutal....and I dont' mind butchuring...but those cones do seem harsh. I mean what is the difference if you chop the head off and they bleed out that way? Course you want to bleed them out.

I guess for people that process a lot of birds, they can be "hands off" if they use a cone...I dunno, I still wouldn't do it that way regardless of how many I was processing...

Haha... That is for sure... I'm a Clatskanie native and my family and I actually own the feed store there. Usually when I help people pronounce it I usually say Cats-can-fly then for some reason they usually get it right LOL It's funny now that I live in North Dakota those people that pronounce Oregon say it ORE-E- GONE instead of Or-e-gun like us natives LOL Washington here is Worsh-ing-TON... silly people

Unfortunately, even locals say "Warsh-ing-ton". Drives me nuts. My own family does it.
I tell the to spell it for me...they then spell it out: "W-a-r-s-h-i-n-g-t-o-n". My dad trys to blame his "scottish" ancestors..he read in some article about this...he is not even scottish.

They do this to drive me mad....I just know it.

my phonetics professor at U-Dub (UW) .. while teaching us to transcribe exactly the pronunciations of those we were listening to .. would once in a while yell:

THERE IS NO R IN WASHINGTON !!!!!

then he will go on about the "intrusive R sound" in the local dialect ...

but yeah, those guys down at UO who spell it Orygun, have it about right ...

I am all for original pronunciations over colloquial ones. For instance, Pierre South Dakota is pronounced "peer" instead of the french "pee-air". In Dubois, Pennsylvania they say "do boyz" instead of the french "doo bwah".

For many parts of the USA , towns, lakes, streets and parks have Native american names that were translated into french and no one is left around who spoke the original language so we often have to infer the pronunciation.

My two pet peeves are "Warshington" and "Haaalaa peen oo"

and Washingtonians pronounce the local town --dee MOYNZ ... rather than the Iowan pronunciation d'moain

I would have to agree. It seems a bit extreme for me. My DD was having a hard time with even the thought of butchuring any...I told her that the we can not keep every one...especially if we want to get into showing...yes her favorites can stay as long as there are not more roos than needed...but until they are go to freezer camp we will give them the best life EVER. It is still hard on a 10 yo who is not use to farm life (I grew up with all this and it was quite the norm), but she is understanding the cycle of life and what has to be done. But I definitely go for the more humane and quick kill.

I dunno how Oregon is pronounced in Oregon but in South Dakota (they fancy themselves both part of the west and midwest, cowboys and farmers) they say Orgun or with a very quick and small e sound ORyGUN

Of course there are all kinds of Western USA towns from Montana down to Texas that are Spanish in origin and those names are all messed up. The worst of which is Camano Island.

Yep, DS is 10 also, and it took him a while, but now if we have a nasty roo HE is the one to suggest we butcher it.

All it took was his first bite of home grown chicken! LOL

AND we usually make it an anatomy lesson. I don't know a lot of 10 year olds who can point out a gall bladder!

Why doesn't that surprise me? ;)Illia, I was taking a look at your website and blog the other day and I'm missing updates from you! I know you were super busy with the greenhouse and all of your delicious exotic fruits this summer, but I'm wondering if you'll ever find time to update your photos and pages from Mora farm? I always enjoyed looking at them.
