The second chick was from an egg marked "Christina" I saw as I took it out. Either the first one wasn't marked or I just missed the name. The pipped ones are not doing much yet. And we bought a snake-rock for warmth instead of using the lamp. That room is very warm because there's an unwrapped hot water heater in an open cabinet and the well-insulated freezer which dumps heat from its compressor and I had a major league heat-lamp flashback to setting my grandmother's bed on fire with one when I was a little kid. I'm going to move my study thermometer/hydrometer in there, though, so I can be sure they're OK for temp.

The elder chick was glad to have company.

my chicks at two or three days old when I got them, didn't seem to need as much warmth as "recommended"

instead of a heat lamp, I used a ceramic radiant panel heater, made to go in the kneehole of office desks

roughly 100* on the surface (but you can keep your hand against it for several seconds), my chicks would snug their tails up near it but not touching; most of the day they would scamper around and once in a while hop on the roost-branch I had about four inches away from it, rarely would they snuggle against it

somewhat similar to an EcoGlow, though probably uses more electricity, and is a vertical panel rather than a horizontal plate that can be ducked/lain under

Let me know how the snake rock works out.

Yeah, that's what I thought you meant when you talked about a radiant heater; the rock is not as big a surface but was what we could get tonight that is the right temperature, and they're also getting a security sweater- a big Icelandic wool one we bought at Goodwill when my daughter was in middle school, and which the moths have been at. I'm from the old school that thinks babies need a bit of cover to be OK.

I would take a look at Municipal Bonds. They are just as liquid as cash, but pays much much better interest than any savings account.

There is a program through the state that help save for college tuition. I think it's called the Get program. I found the web site. http://www.get.wa.gov/

Well the night crew is here, but I am going to have to head for bed soon. We need to head into Seattle tomorrow. DH has an appointment, and I am going to hang with DD, DSiL, and the grandbaby dogs. I have a new grandbaby dog. Miss Nala is an 12 week old Great Dane. She is really smart and she is already working on sitting when she meets people.

Third chicken born, it had been too close to the dome of the incubator and when the egg was moved a little it basically fell open. Either Phoebe's or Anitra's, it was just dated the 13th with no name.

They're going to think my daughter is Mom.

They seem to be OK with it- I wouldn't use this size for more than seven chicks, though. I'm going to go look at panel heater's before the big incubator is due on Friday. And I'll have toget some larger space cleared, predator proofed, and weatherized pretty soon, too

And how adorable that your daughter is so involved! My son loves being with our chickens too, but our daughter just thinks of them as poop generators LOL

The total hatch took a full two days for our seven chicks. The difference in size between the first and last was incredible the first few days. Are they all the brown & black 'camo' look so far? Or do you have any silver? So exciting!
