pips&peeps :

You guys have fun!!! I'm going to a banquet for my horse club this weekend with my daughter. Apparently she won an award this year with her new horse.

How great for her. Getting an award always keeps their interest going. Please show us pics.

Why is it when I go back to sleep for a few hours (three, this time) when I wake up I feel as if that were all the sleep I've gotten?

I'm going to go out in my nightie and parka and let Ian and Sylvia out, and possibly go back to bed for a bit before the daughter and I go get groceries, et'c.

Now thats what I call bragging! Especially since I wasn't REALLY bragging. I was only REPORTING in reference to Ogress post.

How old are your girls? Thats great they are laying that well without lights.

Squirrels!!!!! Dang it, I have been invaded by squirrels!

I just checked the feeders and saw that the run feeders are nearly empty. As I started filling the feeders, my chickens came in from all over the yard to crowd around the feeder I was filling, but one EE stopped dead in her tracks and stared

One of these things is not like the other, One of these things is just not the same....

There among the chickens surrounding the feeder was a squirrel standing on its hind legs amongst the chickens, eagerly waiting for more food, and when I was pouring the food, another popped out of the hen house and 2 more were chasing each other through the trees behind the run!
Only the one EE noticed the squirrels, the others were oblivious!

Do squirrels eat eggs?

Can I blame them for the drop in egg production?

So, I cracked open the remaining eggs. They all had partially-to-mostly formed chicks inside (clearly not ready for hatching, but many identifiable). So does too much time/mishandling of eggs cause the chicken version of a miscarriage?

Sorry, never spent much time in the south, so I haven't acquired a taste for possum, squirrel or skunk for that matter OR for road kill!! LOL

I have read that there are a few factors, freshness of eggs, time set, humidity or lack there of, and temprature. Sometimes, you just have to leave them in there a couple days longer then you calculated because they may just be behind. I did that and ended up with three more chicks. I think the hardest part is keeping your hands off the incubator once they start hatching, I created a shrink wrapped chick that way, and I have the same incubator you have. It's a good one. I like it a lot and I think it does a good job. If you don't have a hygrometer it's good to get one, and have a second thermometer too. I have been pretty successful in the few hatches I've had with few fatality's.

ok so after reevaluation of the drake pen, I don't have as many as previously thought, so that's good, I was worried I'd run out of pen space!! Still have a bunch of roos tho!!

OK so I better get on with the gettin ons and get off here, and get my kids ready! Will call when I get up there!! Everyone have a safe trip!!
