She has/had an auto immune blood disease a name of which I cannot remember, in which the spleen attacks & destroys both old & new red cells,
Normally the spleen is supposed to do it's job of destroying just the tired old red cells while the marrow makes new strong red cells.
In her case, her spleen went nuts & ate all red cells, so it was removed.
So now her immune system is alot weaker.
Both daughters have the same disorder.
One of the twins had her "attack" while visiting over the summer with relations in Florida (I think) and just collapsed.
Luckily they were on it quickly with red blood cell transfusions or she would have died.

The chemo was after the splenectomy I believe.

Great efforts to knock her immunal system down & get it to stop attacking herself.
Now, any bug that comes along hits her pretty hard.
My immunal system is still whole & over active....any little sinus drainage & I can eexpect massive throat soreness due to attacking T cells (the white cells that destroy disease, and in our cases can destroy the good stuff too, like my intestinal lining if the T cells 'see' wheat proteins they attack & destroy the entire length of digestive lining) T has UC as well...so she has a delicate balance going on, and stress does not help one bit either !!

the over achieving immune system... seem to be a lot of us who have them these days. makes one wonder what the hec is going on. I got a new drug to go with my Humira today, called methotrexate, has many uses and seriously bad side effects lol. I am taking it anyway...on monday in case it makes me sick, then I can call doc and cry

I have wondered that very same thing myself.
Seems some of us have pre-determined genetically to have this happen.
One doc explained to me that your body is like a rain barrel...and during your life, stress, sadness, depression, viruses, GMOs?,food additives, food coloring, dry cleaning chemicals, lead, gasoline, chemicals, paint fumes,THC?, alcohol ?, ink from papaer at work, car exhaust, etc is all dumped in this rain barrel...and the immunal system works quickly to eliminate all this crap from the body.

Then it can overflow, and the immunal system goes ape.
It is then what is called "sensitized" and will no longer tolerate some thing at all...and begins to attack.

And it attacks where that predetermination is.
Alot of people can carry around the celiac gene their lifetime & never have it develope into disease, yet they have the gene.
A car accident, a misscarriage, a bad flu or chicken pox, and the next thing you know, you have an auto immune disorder.
All my brothers & sister more than likely have the gene, as do my kids, as did I when I was young, but no symproms until I was older & went through life's traumas.

You must not be very tall.

I'm 5' 10"....but it is still hard to get into them. DH is always stashing stuff on TOP of the fridge....so I could never get into the cupboard behind it. I do like the drawer under the fridge though.

This is off subject but reminds me when I climbed on top of the fridge to paint or something and fell off. Seriously knocked my back out of whack which brings me to my point. Pettec mentioned stretching a certain way and it released her back. Well, I was in excruciating pain for a few days then placed my hands in the small of my back and stretched backwards. It sure felt good, then I felt an immediate release and all was back to normal. Have no idea what I did but I unstuck something!

I am 5'4" in my prime, and maybe 5'3" now, and I am almost able to see the top of my fridge, but not quite.
And I must say I am so glad I cannot see the dust up there!!!!!!!!!

I have DH clean the top of the fridge, it is his territory, not mine

DH does that...he leans against the kitchen counter, at his waist, then bends over backwards & pops it all back into shape.
Hunkering kills him, after a lifetime of working on cars, standing up & slightly forward just kills his back.

Ya, me too. I can bend over all day weeding and planting but don't ask me to stand up! It takes me a few before I can stand erect. It's that halfway position thats so hard.

Exactly.
The gene is there just waiting.
If you fill your rain barrel you can very well end up with the disease of one sort or another.
I read a story once of a very clean & healthy living pediatrician that was on a bike cross country race...took several days through BC I think...when a wild fire broke out & the countryside was smoke in.
The cyclists had to stay over in a motel & bike each day & the smoke got so bad they were ready to give up & leave.
Then the next day she collapsed, and they found her blood was so thick at the tiny rural hospital they gave her massive anti coagulents, and flew her to a big hospital somewhere.
They found her immunal system went crazy & ate all her anti coagulent properties (whatever they are I cannot remember)
Weird.
I myself have come to terms with my disease.
I have decided as far as diseases go, I am glad I got this one, it is easy to control.
As for RedReiner, she has a bad one!
There are millions of auto immune disorders & diseases !
Some have one that attacks the sterum ligaments & feels like a heart attck 24/7.............they are fascinating!

My neighbors niece had an auto immune disease that acted like her liver was an alien invader. She was only 15. By the time they realized what was happening she needed to have a liver transplant.

Exactly CCG!!!!!!!!

Toni tells me to tell you all her lovely auto immune disease is called Sherosytosis.she got the gene from her Mom, and 2 sisters have it also, and both her twin girls have it.
Google that for more info.

here is the Wikipedia explaination ::: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spherocyte

although
this link does not go into detail of what is done when you DO have it.
