Thanks!  I guess I knew that.  Just trying to come up with an excuse, that maybe his behavior might change:)

Nopers there.
The other issue is IF you carry around the tennis racket, shovel, etc constantly, you will always remind him of what that represents: pain, & harm.
And so he will cringe & be Defensive every time he sees you.
Small brain+ tennis racket=pain
Or
small brain=shovel=attacker/so he has to defend himself
So the relathionship registers every time he sees the weapon/so he has to defend himself
And the weapon, whatever it may be or not at all~~~ is associated with you.

depends on how you are holding the racquet ... (my experience)

if it is dangling downward vertically, and you are swinging it slightly like a pendulum, in front of your knees, it becomes a herding device,
likewise if you are letting it dangle nonchalantly by your side, in profile so to speak

if you raise it to horizontal or above, it then becomes, in his eyes, a symbol of power -- you can parry him if he takes a chance at you, whack him if he tries to spur, and flatten him against the ground if you can get him that way

Roopert is learning (since I unearthed the racquet) that I will not bother him if he is not bothering me, but if he gets out of line, he will get flattened; also since I call and then feed him and the pullets, that is something an alpha rooster would do, supply food for the flock

Slightly swinging or otherwise, it is not a herding device, this is not a herd, it is chickens, and the flock guradian will see it as a threat.
Especially when such threat has caused him harm in the past.
I was schooled by elder poultrymen who told me what to do & not do to "incite" a cock bird's wrath....depending on the bird himself.
And constantly carrying around a weapon (to him) is a no no & you are inviting aggresion.
There are ways to walk amongst their family, and ways to invite aggression...IF your cock is mean, then by all means stay armed.
But carrying a weapon (to him) is inviting him to try & resort to ambush you when he gets a chance.and thus keeps the fight going.
Hopefully, but probably not that he will figure out that you are NOT a chicken NOR pat of their family regardless of if you have food or not.The
ir thinking does not go that far, you are a threat, period.

I bugged out of work early today - I was supposed to stay through closing, and the last appointment was sceduled to start at 8pm! I called then and told them of the nasty road conditions and the heavy snow, but they still insisted in coming in because they need their tax refund ASAP! Luckily someone else volunteered to stay late. People were coming in saying they heard we could get another 18 inches in town between now and Wednesday. We get 2-3X as much up where I am, so I headed to ACE for heated water bowls for the chickens, and new dog beds, and I brought the dogs in the house. The dogs usually stay in their heated cabin and connected run to guard my coops from bears, but a few years ago we had snow over 3 feet deep, and it was absolutely miserable getting to the little cabin. The dogs were not in it at that time, but our snow-blower was parked in the covered yard behind it - dummy us.

We soon remembered the biggest bonus to having the dogs out in their cabin; we can't smell Willow FART!!!!

They also could go in and out all they pleased. Shasta has a bad habit of chewing everything in sght, so when she is in the house, she is either following me around and being carefully watched, or she's locked in her kennel. Willow loves sleeping in her kennel, I never need to close her door. She is old and does not move around as much as she used to. They played in the snow for hours today, Shasta loves it. Willow somewhat does, but tires out quickly and then hangs out in the chicken coop. Funny, some of my chickens freak out when the dogs get near, but if they should crawl through the pop-doors, the chickens take no notice of them. The dumb birds will climb all over the dogs and stand on their heads so they can reach the food in the top of the feeders!

I love the ponies in the snow photos!

DD Loves CL's Techno Chicken Video - she watched it about a dozen times! (kids with no TV are easily entertained).

I love CGG's Farting horse TV commercial!
