Thanks everyone who replied. I'll send an email out to the kids tomorrow listing all the options. Still looking for Silkies as one family really wants a splash pullet or chicks, so if anybody has a lead on them, that would be great. Or any other bantams, let me know! Thanks so much guys! Heading to bed and will check back in the a.m.. Sleep well!

He's my favorite, and the sweetest of the bunch. I love his coloring too. My daughter likes Herb (de Provence) and Rufous is a beauty, but a bit of an odd genius. Every time he sees someone use the gate latch to enter the run, he spend the next 10 to 15 minutes leaping up at the latch trying to knock it loose. He looks rather like a bouncing basketball when viewed from my office window.

I honestly don't know why I didn't think of this before. I have two splash Silkies that came from Marge Best. One hen and one pullet (almost hen). I would like them to stay together. It would be a while before they could be shown (they have both done quite a number on their crests) BUT they are both show quality.

What is it that makes the Hova easier than the LG. From what I see they are both wafers. I am just curious what the difference would be.

My LG isnt a wafer. I do have one that has a wafer and still cant fig out how to get that thing to temp..

Um well for what I have read and what you guys have said hatching your own eggs results in healthier chicks and chickens. Not to mention the thread about all the dead chicks kinda scared me.

As for how often and how many um I am not sure. Probably not to many. My husband and I are looking for more property probably about 10 acres. So I eventually want to have 25-30 laying hens at all times and maybe a 2 or 3 roos. I dont have the time to get into breeding yet because I have little kids 8, 5 and 2 1/2 who take a up a big chunk of my time. The chickens were for them in the first place so I figure hatching eggs would be something we could do together as a family and maybe learn a little in the process.

My husband is handy but more in the way of cars. He a Army Mechanic. I am pretty handy with a hammer and nails myself but the electrical part not so much. LOL my luck I would end up with a batch of fried eggs.

So I guess what I am trying to get at, at least for now... Something small and not uber expensive at least until I get the hang of it and have a little more time on my hands then invest in something more costly.

Than Id go with the one your looking at, my girl friend has one and likes it. The LG can be a pain in the you know what. I can get my to temp no problem but I keep it in my bathroom downstairs, as for the humidity, they are right I put a cup or plastice bowl with a sponge in it to get the humidity to stay at what I want it. Id say just be sure you have forced air and a egg turner,
When you want to make a big one let me know its not hard, my husband did it out of a cabinet and than the electrical stuff was really easy too. It was hard for us becasue the firt therm, we got was broken. The second one wasnt so it was a breeze than, just set and walk away...
