I have a small hatch today... and one has failed to intake the yoke sack and it is dragging it around the bator. Had to pull all the hatched babies cept that one. hope it survives.... first time its happened for me.

So sorry Breschandra, thats rough. I hope you have others that will hatch out just fine. Maybe you should lock her in a dog crate with her little clutch of eggs, thats what I do with mine and let her out once or twice a day to tend to her business.

Rainwolf, never really understood what happens to the yolk, what do you mean by intake? Must have missed that in chick 101.

IDIOTS! They think 5 hens will feed a family?
Not good to skip math class!
Back to school for these drop outs!

Lynnwood council votes to allow residents to keep up to 5 chicken hens
The council votes to allow people to keep up to five of the fowl.

LYNNWOOD -- The path is set for people to be able to coop up to five chickens on single-family properties in Lynnwood.

The City Council scratched into the topic, passing an ordinance allowing chickens, 5-2 at Monday's meeting.

The ordinance requires that 15 feet separate a coop or pen from neighbors, the fowl cannot be kept in front yards, fencing must separate chickens from neighbors and roosters are not allowed.

In 1917, the Puget Mill Co, developed the 30-acre Alderwood Manor, which was located where the city now stands. It was promoted as an agricultural community and soon became home to the largest egg-producing farms in the country.

"It's ironic that a city, rooted in chicken farming, does not allow chickens," said Michelle McGraw, a Lynnwood resident speaking for the measure.

Robert Bostwick, another Lynnwood resident, described his chicken husbandry practices over the past 50 years. He asked the council to grandfather existing coop position on properties as well as flock size, should either be out of compliance.

Council members asked community development director Paul Krauss if that move could cause punitive actions on chicken owners coming forward and asking for exceptions under the new guidelines.

"As far as I'm concerned it would be no harm, no foul," Krauss said. "We make a reasonable assumption that 95 percent of homeowners want to do the right thing."

Councilmen Benjamin Goodwin and Loren Simmonds cast dissenting votes.

The last thing the chick does before hatching is to draw the remainder of the yolk into its abdomen. It has been getting food and water from the yolk through the chicken equivalent of an umbilical cord. The chick needs to pull the yolk sac into its lower abdomen through the umbilical opening and grow the opening closed.

In this chick the opening did not close and when it hatched it "pulled" the yolk sack back out of the abdomen. Now it is possible (but not likely) it will re-absorb the yolk sack on it's own..... I've heard a lot of ways to help but I find it is not as healthy later if I help them a lot to start. So this chick is in the incubator on its own peeping it's fool head off (hopefully encouraging the other eggs) I will feed/water and care for it as long as it fights without pain etc but I feel I may have to cull this one :/

heck 8 laying hens would barely feed a family... and No rooster means they have to buy and replace if they want chicken meat as well as eggs

Sorry Ron, I can only do chicken math!

Hi Bikebirds, Welcome!

I bought my first chicks through a tiny local feedstore - I do not know if they were hatchery chicks or not. Not all feed stores sell hatchery birds, I know a few people here even sell ther chicks through feed stores.

After buying my chicks, I joined BYC, and now I buy all my chicks through friends I have made here. There are quite a few people from the dry-side, but I am not familiar with where everyone lives.

If you stick around here for a week or so, and figure out what types of birds you want, I'm sure people here will steer you to some quality birds.

I also would like to let you know about a chicken show going on at the Monroe fairgrounds on March 17. This would be a good place to go to to see a lot of birds and talk with people familiar with the various breeds and they will give you their pros and cons.

Good luck!

I'm back to helping my son with his homework. School bus arrives in just 6 hours, so I better get going. His teacher sent me an urgent e-mail this (Thurs.) afternoon about an essay due tomorrow. He had not started.
