Text from Rikke at the vet...

1,000$ for them to repair the wounds (that Rikke already did what she could on)

they did xrays, and Marty's hip is broken on the left side .. 2,000$ to operate and fix it.

They are cleaning and re-dressing her open wounds now, and will send Rikke home with some meds.

Here's it to hope that the chicken will be able to heal the hip fracture on it's own .. we cannot afford that.

So, what happened to the bird ?

I don't have an answer to the shell less egg issue. As I'd posted a couple of weeks ago, Juju, my special girl who will be a year old in May, has never laid me a decent egg. All I ever find from her are shell less eggs in the nest, or broken yolks she's dropped from the roost. She is fed the same layer diet as the other girls, has access to oyster shell, gets fed additional greens but just cannot give me a good hard shelled egg. It's frustrating but I won't cull her because she was my "first hatched" and she's the only one who will voluntarily climb 10 steps up to the kitchen deck to look for me. I think there's just something wrong with her. If she ever lays a normal egg I will rejoice as if she's gotten straight A's on her report card.

I have had hens like that, within a breed, one laid a decent egg 2x a week, one never laid & one laid a shell-less blob egg 3x a week.
Upon butcher, the one who never laid had NO OVA at all !!!!!!!!!!.
The shell less layer had a few blobs in her...but no evidence of any shell formation, and the one who laid a nice egg every so often had about half the normal ova seen along the inside of the back...but not nearly half of what I see on other hens.
I culled the flock.

I am getting very bored here locked in the wee cabin & all this steady rain for the last 36 hours straight !!!!!

And to think it is going to be like this for the next 5 days ??????????????????????

Glad I got a boat !

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm getting a little worried with all this rain. Just a little while ago a older guy knocked on my door asking if I had any timbers laying about that I didn't need. Said his name was Noah.
