Just came home from church and checked on the broody and the eggs. 3 are making noise and then I noticed eggs shell on the bottom of the nest. But no chick. Started to look around and noticed some blood on the other nest box. Someone ate the chick.....

If I knew who was doing it they would be gone. I have all the other chickens locked in their run. And I have a cat crate ready to put the broody and her eggs/chicks in tonight when I lock them up. I've had two broodys hatch a chick with not a problem and know this. Guess I will have to keep a broody separate next time.

I'd been sitting down and cutting cage wire, so when I came out to put the Hamburg's second-favorite treat food (after red worms) in their run I sat in the open door to take photos. Elvis is still gorgeous, and gets shorted on treats because he'd rather show off than eat.

I'm getting about 18 eggs a week from the three hens in this pen; I really want to have another pen going, with at least four hens. Hamburgs have a reputation for being flighty and stand-offish, but I think it comes down to them needing more room and cover than some breeds.

Wow, Elvis is gorgeous but so are his ladies! I wish my setup allowed for Hamburgs, I think they are so striking.

Also wanted to share some chick outlines taken from the outside of my small, in the house brooder, a recycled cow protein tub. I thought maybe CR could find some new metal chick shapes from my outlines. They are so active that it is hard to catch them holding still!

On a lighter note....I think my Sexlink Lucy is going to be ok. She looked and sounded better this morning. No breathing issues. Her abdomen doesn't seem to be as bloated either.

I have a question or 2 for the group. Remember I'm a rank novice at this chicken raisin' thingy.
I have 8 RIR all doing very well. I would like them to have full access to the back yard (approx 1 acre) and it is fenced, about 41/2 feet high. Will I have to clip their wings to keep them in the back yard?

I am planning also to obtain about 4 Black Jersey Giants. Anything I should be aware of having these large chickens?

is anyone in the Seattle area interested in the IBC's i posted earlier?
I might have a line on some but need to figure out how many to get so let me know! they had veggie oil in them so clean for water storage... great for rain barrel type use.
