Everybody gave EricaD such good advice I wasn't going to throw in my 2 cents. But now I will because I have a little bad news! I went out at 3:00pm to let my flock out to free range. I noticed my rooster Ricky Retardo wasn't with them so I went looking for him. I found a bunch of his feathers with blood on them in the corner of my big run. My run is five feet high with electric fence at the bottom , in the middle and at the top plus another strand a foot over that and then another one a foot over that so its seven feet high. I can't see any signs of anything getting under the fence and it isn't damaged in anyway like something went through it or over it! and the electric fence was working! It had to be a hawk or a eagle. Ricky was way bigger then any of the hawks we have around here! I'm not sure why it got him and not one of the smaller hens. The only thing I can think of is that the hens ran for cover and he might of stayed to fight or chase off what ever it was. I'm sure what ever it was will be back for another free meal.

So see Erica unless your chickens are totally enclosed at all times there is a chance of something getting them.

Tamara... sorry to hear of your loss !

Oh nooooooo :(

Thanks for sharing this. I'm re-thinking my plan. I'll focus on free ranging when we're home and supervising only, and run electric netting for a large "faux" free range environment only if the dogs prove themselves and can be with them. And if not, then an enclosed run it will have to be.

Actually, if we enclose the yard with electric netting, the dogs probably don't even need an invisible fence. The area will be really big, so they can just stay inside the fenced area with the chickies!

Hmmmmmm, wheels turning...

Hey, can anyone recommend a good local source for nice quality Silkies? I've read that hatchery Silkies won't be as good, and to try to get them locally. Would appreciate it!

If you want to learn how to do there are some really good youtube videos on how to do. I have a few links saved.

Thanks, but I really would prefer to just pay someone. I found one place that will do it, for $7/chicken! That's outrageous! I was hoping someone locally offers this service for a few bucks a pop.

Well folks don't count on any more of my little jars of sticky gold (honey) for a while. Today I discovered that all of my hives are dead ! This really sucks. I enjoyed working with the bees so much! Just another attempt and failure in my life. How much more will there be.
Same thing happened to me.
Not sure what killed the colonies, but I decided to destroy the hove bodies and frames in case there was some virus or bacteria contamination.

I can make new structures, but I missed the window for ordering new queen packages / nucs.

Maybe I'll get lucky and catch a swarm. Gotta think positive.

Kinda mad.... I ordered some Cornish Rocks from a local feed store awhile back and they were suppose to be in today. Well I called to make sure they had them and I was informed that their hatchery is sold out for the season and they will no longer be getting anymore more. REALLY??? UGH now what am I suppose to do?

How frustrating! But maybe some folks on here would be willing to split a meatie order with you?
