When is the earliest you can determine if you have a roo or hen? With these 26 chicks I have a friend who wants to take some but she can only have hens and I don't want to give her any roos. Right now they are only a couple weeks old.

Usually by four to six weeks one can see combs coloring up on the males. At least, that's my experience.

I think those bills endeared you to Mr. RR. It is sad he is gone. I saw a large owl in a tree over my hens a few hours ago. Somewhere near you is a raptor with an expensive diet.

I was going to suggest that is was possibly an owl that got RR. They are a fearsome raptor and I also understand they like cats too.

Yeah there is a large owl here and a couple large hawks that like to circle around our property because of our feral cat population.

Its done... well for the most part... I just need to paint it.

Three years ago ,before we had chickens There was a male & female owl that hung around in a tree in the field for about three weeks then left. From time to time I can hear owls at night.! So it is possible that it was an owl. come to think of it about two days ago somebody posted about four signs down our street. "missing Large Black cat." if it was an owl he should be full for a while. But I have seen hawks and eagles not right over head but VERY close by. so who knows. well I'm off to do a head count of my girls

I posted this in the Coop area but thought I would see what the locals had to say:

Hello, we are designing our coop. Doing our best to make it the safest that we can. I like the idea of having outside access to retrieve eggs from nesting boxes. But was curious, do you guys put "locks" on them? I don't want a crafty critter trying to get into my coop through the nesting boxes access door.

Thoughts?
Christina
