I posted this in the Coop area but thought I would see what the locals had to say:

Hello, we are designing our coop. Doing our best to make it the safest that we can. I like the idea of having outside access to retrieve eggs from nesting boxes. But was curious, do you guys put "locks" on them? I don't want a crafty critter trying to get into my coop through the nesting boxes access door.

We use d-rings on ours - the kind folks use for keyrings. Never had a problem with ours, but then ours cannot be climbed up upon as they are flush with the wall of the coop.

When is the earliest you can determine if you have a roo or hen? With these 26 chicks I have a friend who wants to take some but she can only have hens and I don't want to give her any roos. Right now they are only a couple weeks old.

What breed are they?

I have no idea right now. They all look black with some combo of white on them either on the face legs or mixed. They are auction chicks

The doghouse is now an outdoor brooder. I need to tweak the door a bit, but for now, it works. I was trying to work with what I had on hand.

Everybody's bathed- sure am tuckered. I have Polish and aruacanas and a silkie going to Stevenson. I think I'll try taking a trio of true araucanas to sell- maybe there'll be someone there who has a clue what they are...

Hi everyone !
Hope all is well...................Got back just now from DR appts & shopping in the big city, had to hit Trader Joe's for TUNA (thats FlyRobin I love this tuna, tastes so fresh !!!!!!!!!!! and a great price !!!)

Had to get a few bottles of 2 buck Chuck (Charles Shaw $2.95 wine) for dad, we keep his wine rack full as we help ourselves when there

Gastro doc update appt today & he is very interested in my thyroid , and the amount of meds I am on...........maybe effecting my "system"
So had to do the blood draw again.
Other than that, Einstein has a periodontal pocket exposing dentin & hurtzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz and so they have an APPT to do curatage & want to bone graft which I know will be useless in anyone over 30 years of age.
Tomorrow is Squash planting day.....already started all 6 mealon types 1 week ago & all are up & running...........ALL tomatoes are at least 16" tall & transferred to the green house for 2 weeks now & doing great !!!
Peas are climbing !
Skovies is on slug patrol all day and I must say they are darn good at it !
Both girls came back up to the tub by the porch yesterday afternoon with giant strings of snotty slug goo hanging off bills like chop slime...................LOL they are keepers !

Cheaper & better than laying slug bait all over !!!
OK, exhausted & gotta get back to work !

So, am I to understand that everybody in Washington who is serious about poultry head to Stevenson, WA, on I-84? Is it once a month? And what about the poultry auction in Chehalis, is that worth anything?

Well, no, because I live up on Whidbey Island so we're closer to the Canadian border than we are to Stevenson!

Can't speak for Chehalis, but the Everson Livestock Auction on Mondays is actually pretty good. Go early (starts at 12:30) and get a good seat. You'll want to check out the poultry beforehand and make sure you bring your own carriers, some of the things folks bring birds in aren't appropriate for the ride home. We go at least once a month, sometimes twice.
