Oh, and coud someone tell me how to get multiple quotes in the darn box? I keep trying but can't seem to get it. I think I did it once but that was a while ago and I can't do it again! So frustrated!

It's got to be something simple and I am making it too hard, right?

You click the "Multi" box on each quote you'd like to include and after you have them all selected, you click on the "Quote" box to post your post. Hope that helps.

. I was able to get 75% of my garden in the ground on Saturday

Super excited about that and my youngest turns 3 next Saturday... UGH its crazy around here. Good news I got my brooder done. Just needs to be painted. I added 16 Red Broilers on Friday... Sadly over the weekend I lost 2. I think it got to hot for them. I get my 3 Bourbon Red Turkeys on the 4th. My 7 week old EE chicks ( Hawk and Sparrow) spent their first night in the Hen house on Saturday. Surprisingly they fit right in and seemed no worst for ware. They enjoyed spending the day in the yard in the sun eating grass and whatnot. My 7 Barred Rock Cockerels ( now 13 weeks old) are tryin to crow and tryin to mount my hens... I think its time to make some chicken stock.

I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Renee. I live in Auburn. Our family just got our first chicks. My three kids (10 and 7-year-old twins) are excited about them. They each named one. I think their names are kind of silly, but the kids are proud of them. That's what counts.

I have wanted chickens for a few years, but we had to wait until the city revised their codes to allow for city chickens. They finally revised the codes in November. We live on 1/4 acre and we could have gotten 6 chickens, but we opted for 3 because of the size of our yard and our desire to not be a nuisance to our neighbors. It might be enough for the neighbors to get used to the idea of 3 hens in our backyard. Before getting them, I read two books on raising chickens and attended a class.

Last night we moved our 12-day-old chicks into a 2.5' x 4' metal dog crate that we wrapped in cardboard and plexiglass. They outgrew their plastic tub very quickly. The metal crate seems to work well. Plus, it's tall and that made it easier to attach their light over the top. It gives them a lot more space to run. They appear to love it and are very active. It's fun to watch them try to fly across the floor. Today I plan to devise some sort of "roost" to put in there.

I still need to build the coop. I have been modifying the Purina coop plans to fit in our backyard space. We'll probably have to build the coop 3'x 4' so we have space to attach an outside run. Since there are only 3 of them, I'm hoping a 12-square-foot coop will be big enough. They'll have 28-square-feet in the run. Plus, when they are old enough, we plan to let them free-range in the backyard as long as we are out there with them. We have a lot of Bald Eagles and hawks that fly over our ridge, so we'll have to be very careful about free-ranging. We also have raccoons that come up over the cliff at night, so we're taking precautions to raccoon-proof the coop.

That's pretty much it about our newest additions to the family. I look forward to learning the ins-and-outs of raising chickens in Washington from all of you.

So yesterday afternoon I step out of the front door and I hear one of my hens "broooock" and I look around and don't see her...the closest one was 25 yards away and I thought to myself "well, that was awfully loud"....but then continued on my way and didn't think anything of it.

Got home just as it got dark and put my hens to bed, noticed that Tiana (Black Star) was missing, grabbed a flashlight and looked all over for her but couldn't find her. She's got a bum leg (before I adopted her), so I figured something got her since the birds are free range.

Woke up this morning, stepped out the front door to take the kids to school, and I heard "brooooock" again. Tiana was stuck in our outdoor toybox!

Darn 5yo.

At least she's safe and sound. My two Black Stars are my only layers at the moment, the rest are pullets, and I'm partial to them since they gave me my first eggs ever.

Thank you. I remember your BR wasn't well. I'm sorry you lost her. It certainly is the downside to keeping chickens, isn't it? More to love, more to lose.
Thank you everyone for your kind words. I'm burying her myself this morning. DH doesn't get home from work until almost midnight and was gone again early this morning.

I'm currently using a piece of scrap 2x4 laid flat. 3 1/2 " wide. They can walk it, turn on it and seem to like it that way. Maybe others have had success with different setups?

Ahhh, glad I asked. Makes sense but I was thinking the other way. A few others have said jjust like you explained so that helps so much!

I use a 2 x 4. If you lay the 2 x 4 so that the larger (4) side is up then the birds lie and cover their feet more - which is good in the winter during the cold. But most of mine are smaller end up (2). This works well for my seramas (small) also.

THANKS.
I appreciate the feedback. We made a bigger brooder for them and for now DH made temp little perches for them that are smaller but he's picking up more wood for tonight.

WELCOME Renee,
I"m fairly new here too. We have 6 chicks. Funny because yesterday we built a bigger box for the chicks. I had them in a rubbermade tote, that was just getting to cramped for the first 4 we got (they are 3 weeks). We did similiar idea as you. Built a crate out of palllets and then wrapped it with cardboard for now. DH made a little door since its too high for me to bend over and fetch the chicks if needed. We put them in there and they couldn't get enough of seeing how high they could fly. LOL We had a roll of old screen that we fastened to one end and we can roll it back and forth as needed.

Yep, next we need to concentrate on their coop! So many good ideas on BYC! Check them out.
