I am sorry to hear about Twila. I never experienced pet loss till December when our 11 year old black lab develooped cancer and eventually we had to put him down. I always knew that I loved Jake but never knew I would be so heartbroken.

Now, being fairly new to backyard chickens, I get such anxiety thinking of all the things that can happen to them. I'm driving my husband nuts with all the safety precautions I am making him put in place. AND that isn't even a guarantee!!!

Again, so sorry for your loss!

Now I'd like to put a shrub or something where she is. It's a shady spot -any gardeners have any ideas?​

Been way busy around here on the farm, sorry for being away for so long, bad chicken, no hot dog bun for me. Let's see if I can put it all into a paragraph or two without it all being too garbled up

2 weeks ago, our Amylthea (Nigerian Dwarf Goat) doe, gave birth to Quints, 2 of them were probably less than a lb. each. Rikke (DW) found Maggie (kid2) on the ground the 2nd night, flat out, and about 60º below her normal body temp, for the next several hours, we tube fed, put her in a ziplock minus her head, and stuck her in the deep sink full of 120º water.

She is now a bouncing baby goat with a love for the baby bottle, and her human/goaty parents.

Then we have Marty .. (buff orpington) who was ravaged last month by a coyote. Rikke worked hard to keep her alive, with penG shots, to iodine washes, saline washes and etc.

Now Marty chooses to go into the coop at night herself, foregoing her nice garage apartment I built her, to one-leg hop up onto the roost to spend the night. She is back to laying, and has regained all of her feathers.

Love my wife .. just so you know .. she is the best home-made vet our animal family could ever have.

Add this to all the farm stuff we have going, and we have been pretty busy.

I got out of bed this morning still have to get dressed so i can run hubby's son to the store... I think I would rather play with my chickens.. Now that our mean rooster is no longer in the cage it is a pleasant experience to be able to walk into the pen. I sat down on one of the railroad ties (they are around the perimeter of the pen to help keep things out) and my one hen named mama came up wanting to be held.. she is our blind hen. next thing i know i had 6 of the our young hens up on my lap all wanting attention. It was funny but nice too. This morning I had to clean out the incubator. I was down to 8 turkey eggs. one exploded. So I checked the rest and 2 had turkeys in them but were dead and the others had half developed turkeys in them. it was gross. Seems I have no luck with the incubator. But I will keep trying I look at it as an experiment and just have to figure out all the details and settings. It is a still air hover bator.But I have 3 turkeys sharing nest duty between 2 nests so hopefully might get some babies from that.

I just recently figured this out myself.

1. Go to My Profile
2. Edit account Details button (upper right)
3. About 1/2 way down the page - Uncheck "Remove Nested Quotes in Replies"

I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved pet. Also sorry for all whom have lost birds. It is so hard to deal with. I understand.

Regarding shrub or ? What about a bleeding heart bush? I believe they like shady areas.

I did mention the sheep trying to come in the back door last night, right? Walked up and stood right where the dogs do and scratched with his foot after breaking out of the pen I'd only 2/3 fastened.

So, Jacobs are smart enough to learn from observation.

Today is the day that I relearn the sad truth that the pain is always worst the second day out from any injury. My elbow, especially, feels as if it's been run over by a train. And a long train, not the three-box-cars-and-a-tender that get sent to the box plant at Quadlok four times a week.

This week continues its run of trivial annoyances: somehow in the middle of the night my cellphone got bumped and decided it was playing some sort of game, and overrode the alarm clock factor, and I woke up an hour and a half late. So I've got th reschedule all my food/meds/chores, I guess.

Stupid, stupid reality.

You know the deciduous azaleas called Exbury Variety? Deciduous, shade loving, fragrant, and several of them come in Corgy colors, amber/apricot/peach. The Barn out in Tumwater should have some nice ones (you'll have to drive past Bark and Garden Center, I know, but I've had terrible luck with their plants).
