Help!

I've not been able to read/participate here in a while so I'm sorry if I missed anything important.

Now on to my problem:

My chickens and duck moved out of the pantry on Saturday and into their glorious new coop and run. They were out there for about an hour when one of my dogs found the *one* part of the fence that didn't get secured and all five chickens and my duck scattered to the wilds.

We found one chicken under the shed, three huddled together in the brush down the cliff that is next to their run, one chicken was hiding under a stump (we never would have found her without the help of the same dog as it was dark by then). My sweet little Jemima Puddleduck has not been found. I'd like to be optimistic but I have to be realistic. I hiked (by 'hiked' I mean 'skidded' and 'cussed') the cliff for a couple of hours on Sunday looking for her. I even downloaded two different aps to my phone that play duck calls. Nothing. Then I saw a bear and I scrambled back home as quickly as possible. She's a rouen so there's zero chance of survival in the wild; especially the wild here.

My problem is that the chickens absolutely will not come out of the coop. I can't lure them out, I can't bribe them, I pick them up and they're fine being held but as soon as I set them down they flip. Now, don't get me wrong, I do not blame them at all but I would like to know if anyone has any ideas on how to get them to come out.

If he is content, he gets turquiose & deep blues on his head & red caruncles.
He is in effect, a mood turkey.
You can tell exactly what his mood is !

Wow that is interesting, never knew that about turkeys! He is a handsome fellow.

Well, I'm back, for a little bit anyway, got some stuff caught up, finally! First off, I see a new sign under my name and I just want to say a big
THANK YOU!! to everyone that participated in that!!

I had know idea how these things are acquired till someone clued me in!! LOL
I appreciate the thought! I have made some good friends here!
Also,

to all the newbies, there is lots to learn, and there are quite a few people on here, that have EONS of chicken experience, so if you see peeps with lots of posts under their name, chances are they are our resident experts and I have learned a lot from them! I learn something everyday, not only about my chickens, but, from all the animals and people that are in my life!

Weather has been crappy, and cold, almost 30 something last night!!

had to set heat lamps up again, just to make sure everyone stayed warm. Hopefully going to make a road trip to get said turkeys and poults, and a few more Buckeyes!!
Ok, speaking of Buckeyes, these guys crack me up!! so, I was out trying to move my march 5th hatch chicks, which include 4 buckeye, and I had my tennis shoes on, all the buckeyes were trying to grab my shoelaces and started untying my shoes!! LOL!!

Everytime I took a step they would run up and grab a lace, then I would retie it and try to walk and they would run up and pull them loose again!! I finally had to pick them up and carry them outside so I could walk!!
On the goatie side of things, I had my friend who raises Boers come over and she said, ALL of my does are prego, and the ones that should kid mid May weren't bagging up yet, but, she said, sometimes they don't until the last min, so, we will see soon!

And last and certainly not least, here is a huge PET PEEVE of mine!! This same friend said that Saturday am at 530, some woman drove by her house and with a little kid screaming in the car yelling "no mama, no mama" dropped a dog off and drove off!! There are words I can not use on this forum to describe people like that!!

If you can't afford animals,....meaning (proper care, spaying neutering ect) then don't get them!!!!! Why do people have to make their problem someone elses??? It is very obvious this person, either had a female that they didn't alter and it had pups, or she got this pup from someone and couldn't take care of it!! And obviously they had had it long enough for the kid to get attached to it!!

There are plenty of places you can take them, not just the Humane society, especially over here!!

So my friend says, can you come over and tell me how old it is? She already has 6 dogs, that keep her place secure! And guess who ends up taking him????? ok do I have "sucker" written all over?? LOL!!!
Meet, Juan Pablo Gonzales Martinez Rojas!!!!! but, we call him Taco!!! LOL!! He is only,....maybe, 8 or 9 weeks! And so far, he is my shadow, and we are learning to be kind to chickens, ducks, and goats, ( he is as big as my friends goat kids) he was playing with them when I went to look at him!!! I think he is probably some kind of Chihuahua cross, possibly dachshund or maybe even Min Pin, who knows?? I knew my husband was gonna have my tail, so, I wrote on our white board, " I have three words to say" " Don't freak out! LOL
He has taken to kennel training and potty training nicely and as young as he is I am going to work hard at getting him chicken and goat friendly, he is curious, a little timid, and insecure, but, If you were thrown out of a car, you probably would be too!! Anyway, gotta call my vet and find out what the latest prices on vaccine's and deworming are!!!

Those poor chicks got the scare of a lifetime, give them some time to forget the ordeal and they will come out. Instead of feeding them in the coop, scatter it out on the ramp and onto the ground, they will come out and eat it when they are hungry enough.

I lost my youngest EE chick (6 wo) Sunday night. She was our favorite, too. I went out to the coop to "tuck the birds in" and realized I was missing her when I counted. It was already dark, so I couldn't really look for her very well, but I took a flashlight out and poked around in the bushes where they like to hang/hide out. Nothing. Looked yesterday during the day. It's the first time a bird has just disappeared. (I've had them for two months now). Last night when I went to tuck them in, I saw a white flash of an animal run away from the pen......and I'm pretty sure it was the neighbor's cat. The next time I see it near my pen it's getting pellet in the butt. Even MY cats know enough to keep away from the pen....my birds are free range, so the pen is open. I'm pretty sure I know what happened to "Blue" now!

Busy last few days- DD turned 24 on Friday, and her brother and his fiance came over for the party, so I had more help/distractions than usual Friday and Saturday. Finally talked to my cousin-next-door on Sunday about hatching some Hamburgs to raise and BLRWs to sell; he's got his incubator full of pheasants right now but will put my request in the queue, so to speak.


Settled down to nine hens laying and Malvina sitting hard, praise be.


Bought a Desert King fig this weekend; it'll go in a big pot so it can be moved to warm microclimates in the fall. Most likely it's going where the stupid mildewy bud-balling Souvernir de Malmaison rose is now, in a protected SW nook between the back porch and the kitchen corner bay window. I don't have braincells at night to get an actual plant order written, and am basically budgetting $20 a week to spend at Burnt Ridge at the Farmer's Market.


Still need to find some old 5/8 or so iron pipe to have welded to my extensive collection of old handleless shovels and spading forks to make a travelling fence; I can't truly free-range because my cousin's chickens are everywhere (I have trouble objecting until I improve the scary plum thicket) and I sort of don't want to anyway.


Lilacs blooming everywhere, both BBG hybrid magnolias in full blaze, and no hired hand again this week. Best go figure out which top priority critical emergency to deal with first

I just finished a project in the yard using electrical conduit. It is very sturdy and only about $2.25 for 10 feet. I went with McLendons, cause they cut it for me. Way cheaper than any other option I looked at. I think it was 1/2 inch, but not sure if that was inside or out. And easy to paint.

Yeah, conduit will work, thanks for reminding me; I'm used to having a big pile of old iron plumbing that was ripped out of a couple of remodels (family full of small-time contractors=lots of random recycling) but I think I'm finally out of that.

What make me most angry about this is that your story means the woman dumped that pet to punish her child, too, so there's two lots of trauma and mistreatment going on, and another generation being taught that we don't have responsibility to be kind to the things we chose to be bring into our lives.

Thing is, pets, farm animals, and children treated with knindness and consistency are so very much easier to live with!

Ah yes, you see, but this is how it works.

You get the award from the court. You pay to have the judgment recorded.

Forever after, or at least for the next ten years, every time the peeing roommate applies to rent a decent rental, or applies for a job, or tries to buy insurance, a credit report is pulled and it shows an unpaid judgment for $600 (or more; mattresses are expensive and that one was new) for malicious mischief. No landlord with a quality rental will rent to her. Jobs offers will be withdrawn. Insurance costs will increase.

It's possible that a credit report will be pulled before she is issued a professional license.

All I really have to say is that your sister is darned lucky to get rid of the roommate with no more damage than that.

You have to learn peeper-talk though.
next time someone asks you if you speak Spainish (Mexican) say no, but I do speak fluent Turkey in the Peeper dialect, and perfectly fluent in goatie & chicken as well as kitty cat meow- meows.
So really, we DO speak more than just English now don't we ?
I bet StumpFarmer can speak fluent bovine !!!!!!!!!!!!
