Hello! Just wanted to introduce myself to the Washingtonians. I was raised on a farm as a child but this is my first flock of my own, even though yes I am 43. So I adopted 10 straight-run chicks from a friend, mixed breeds, this spring. Within a week though, they started crowing and of course no roosters allowed in our little city limits of Wenatchee, so we started culling. By the time we were done, there's four pullets. The coop is far quieter in the mornings too. I also just picked up three adult Easter Eggers that are each giving us an egg a day, all green, very pretty. Those eggs are still fertile from her Roos, so naturally we are going to incubate a few of those too. I might be selling these older ladies come next spring if all goes well since the coop is only so big! Chicken math, right?

Hello almost neighbor! I am in Omak. The people in this thread are amazing! They are all a huge source of information and advice! I have not been here long and am very green to chickens but loving every minute of it! I have EE's as well. Granted mine are only 7 1/2 weeks. I can not wait to see what they lay! Sorry you had to cull so many. Soo sad.. We can not have roos either.. darn it. I love the sound of them in the morning.

Might as well post another photo, for old times sake: the Easter Eggers, ex bathroom chicks: Quinta, Jinjur, and Tertia eating BOSS while Sickly Cockerel (hardly limping now, although still damaged by the aggression of his brother, Snotty Cockerel) supervises; I just stuck the camera through the access hatch and shot on fisheye mode so this is the best of a bad lot. I'm getting three eggs from these hens almost every day, as well as the three from the Hamburgs.

It must be a learned taste. My girls were running around chasing my EE who would not share the big icky slug that she found.

So there's hope then.

I'll keep chucking those slugs in with 'em.

Most likely they sold you the right one. You need to check a couple things to make sure. It will have a sticker that will tell MAX bulb/lamp size also the base where the bulb screws in will be (typically white) ceramic if it is the right one. The others will be very light (weight) and tend to be brown or black PLASTIC.

Thanks for the info. I'll check in the morning. I think the lamp was fairly heavy, and I'm pretty sure the bulb screws into a white socket. The chicks are old enough, and still sleep in the garage, so we're not using the light right now. In the future, I think I will add an extra chain.

here is a proper heat lamp (Note: no clamp! and heavy cord and ceramic base !!! and heavy guard over the bulb.)

OK peeps I will be gone for a few dayz. Not to worry all is OK just gonna go make some glass on the southern OR coast. Finally got all loaded so guess I better get my shower and a couple hours sleep. It's 12:20am and I have to be up at 3:30 and then a 6 hour drive! The things we do for fun!

Dolly hasn't abandoned her eggs since she hatched a chick. In fact, she doesn't seem to have noticed that she has hatched a chick. I'll have to take it away from her tomorrow if she doesn't get off those eggs and lead it to food.

chicks can survive for 3 days after hatch with no food or water. I would put some food and water right next to her if your worried.
I have a broody AM that is sitting on 13 eggs or so... she only comes and gets food once every 3 days or so.....
Still have not figure out how to get her and her flower pot of eggs in to a safe pen for hatching......

Well, darn! (I'd say something stronger, but I'm not sure I can here)

That fickle broody who kept moving off her egg, pecked it so it bled, and, against all odds, actually hatched it, just let it die. She always broods with a bantam Cochin and that Cochin stayed in the nest box. Last night Mom must have decided she liked the Cochin better than her baby and left it. Sigh. No more eggs for that chicken. I don't even really like her. Her only saving grace is the olive egg she lays every 6 months.

Anyone want her? She's free!
