I just got back from getting berrys have 4 flats so Im going to be busy making Jam lots of Jam.

:drool I need to go check my berry sources and see how they are coming along....
Really want some blueberries or huckleberries.... none around here :(

So I have been thinking about getting some Jumbo Cornish X chickens to fill my freezer. I went on McMurry Hatchery and was looking at the priceing. Does anyone know why the males and straght run cost more then the females? Do you want males more than females for meat chicken? I just thought it was odd and am wondering if anyone knows why?

My gues is that males tend to grow bigger faster then females.. so for a quick start meat bird males would be wanted.

CR I have some white plastic roofing stuff that kind that is wavy, how do I cut it to short lengths.  Or should I say how should my husband cut it to shorter lengths?
I'm going to build a smaller coop and have most of the stuff but need hubby to cut the T1-11 for me and the plastic stuff. Oh because I'm a girl...

I use a metal hacksaw blade in a single handle thing.... I tried circular saw and also utility knifes and both created damage for me.... but a hand held single sided metal hacksaw blade took time but I got a nice even cut with no breakage.

I need to find some more of that stuff... sigh
I found a sweet 4"x6"x19' beam for free now to figure how to pick it up!

Well, I thought Buttercup was 100% when we left for Oregon on Friday, but she was back to laying on her side and not breathing well again today. :(

She died an hour ago.....the family taking care of my birds sent me a message today.

I'm so sorry!

Any idea how much feed I should expect to need for a dozen pullets for 6 weeks? They just ate about 10lbs of feed in 4 days...I'm trying to see if I should get another bag of the medicated feed. Guess that's about 100lbs if consumption stays steady. I need another bag. Yep.

The feed rates all depend on many factors.....
1) do they free ranging?
2) do they waste at the feeder?
3) do rodents get into the feeders?
4) do they get a lot of kitchen scraps?

I go through in one month
2 50# bags of layer
4 50# bags of whole grain mix (low protein)
20 5 gallon buckets of spent grain (some of this goes to my goats)
1 50# bag of alfalfa pellets/goat feed (depends on which I'm out of that month)
10 or so banana boxes of produce leftovers (corn husk, lettice, cabbage, etc from the produce dept)
and normal kitchen scraps from a 2 adult household.

Now that being said I have my normal flock of LF, a trio of bantams and about 20 babies growing up..... oh and my mom's 3 Serama's inside...
and 2 pygmy goats...
and my old dog that likes to pretend to be a goat or chicken and eat their foods....
:D

Rainwolf,

The pullets are doing great. I feel kinda bad that they are in quarantine, although I know it's the best long term.

I'm still picking raspberries, the ones in the ground are coming on strong now.
Going to have to start picking currants soon, like tomorrow.

And unbelievably, I found someone with 7 of the panels I need to expand the run. If it doesn't fall through I'll be tripling the run instead of doubling, for $50 less.

Russ- How's the gate coming along?

1) Yes they free-range most of the day, except right now as I treat for worms and cocci as a preventative because their growth seems retarded by something...and because of the 4th of July and people setting off rockets near our house already :(
2) NO waste at the feeder. I have one bird who cleans up after everyone else, but there isn't anything besides half a dozen crumbs anyway, at least there isn't whenever I look. I keep the feeder up HIGH. I'm mean

3) I've yet to see any rodents so I would assume no
4) They don't get a lot of kitchen scraps yet since they free range. Occasional celery hearts, whole cauliflower, or strawberry tops, but that's pretty rare. Sometimes I will bring them our leftover meat from dinner for the protein.

PS- Your birds are SPOILED and so happy I bet! Mine would love to live at your house

I feel awful if I actually wrote something that even BYC considers bad! I think I just said ticked off, or angry...
The filters are VERY tight since the upgrade.

Yeah, don't worry about it. If you really did something wrong you'd hear about it. The first time it happened to me, on the old BYC, I answer a medical question using the word a nal. The filters kept changing the word to "grumpy" Lol! I must have edited that post 10 times, completely confused.
