Cute pic FM!

Hmm, I dn't think they need calcium. Something strange must have happened for her beak to do that. Could she be vitamin depleted due to some other weird sand/shaving eating thing again? Maybe she's off feed and you aren't noticing?

Do you have see her "sharpen" her own beak? Mine do it all the time on the concrete blocks we have lying around.

So it will grow out?

I haven't seen her sharpen her beak in a while. Honestly, I haven't paid a lot of attention to them the last couple of weeks with camping and Cub Camp. Today was the first day I've sat down and held her since before camping. I noticed it while holding her. But, I have seen all them sharpen their beaks on the concrete patio - that's their favorite place to do that.

She hurt her leg while I was moving my mom to Oregon. Now this after camping/Cub Camp. Is this chicken just going to require being coddled all the time? Rhodie and Caunnie seem to be stout.

well hello everyone.

I've been without internet for several days now. Been doing the last touches of moving. Now to get my house in order. Took my dog Dolly, cat Felix, kittens Yoda and Scar to new house. Yesterday Scar was very lethargic so I picked him up and he just layed on my lap purring. Made him as comfortable as possible and then he just stopped everything. So kids had a little funeral for him. We all miss him even hubby who is so not a cat person. It was Hubby who decided to keep Scar when we moved. So it is a bit sad. I am just happy he went peacefully.

Next to move are the chickens and the ducks. No turkeys. Hubby made a trade for them. His daughter didn't want us to butcher the turkeys so she is getting us 5 frozen ones from the store and her mom is keeping the 3. That's ok with me. Less animals that I have to feed. I wasn't too into the turkeys as much as I am my chickens and ducks. One of my sexlink girls ended up looking like Friar tuck hubby says. She managed to get the top of her head pecked at so bad by the others that it is actually bald. She has her own pen until it is completely healed.

Before I move the chickens and ducks I get to finish securing the pen here. I do not want predators!!! Also build a duck pen with their swimming pool.

Hugs to everyone.
Sorry to hear about Scar :(

Now that wouldn't surprise me one bit considering she's the one who eats weird stuff. I'm not sure how much feed she eats. The feed is getting eaten... but by whom, I can't say. I haven't seen her eat sand or wood chips lately. Today I watched her eat a bunch of bugs, plus I fed her a huge worm that I found. Should I be doing that?

I hope not, that's annoying. I feel like I can't relax yet either. Mine have had a steady cold for weeks now but aren't declining or getting worse; I've been putting that bleach solution in their water and trying to get a hold of an appropriate broad spectrum antibiotic for a loooong time. FINALLY I will get the Denagard tomorrow, treat everyone and be done with it. If they don't get better from that, they'll be the stupid flock with the cold...forever. Because I'm DONE. I just want to enjoy everything! No more worrying about locking the coop at night. No more figuring stuff out. I just want it all figured out for good and have fun with my girls!

Sure! No biggie. But watch for worms too. If she has really loved eating earthworms since you started letting them out on dirt, be prepared to worm them at least twice a year. I'd definitely do it end of summer before chilly fall weather sets in. I plan to do it quarterly since my girls already had worms once...at 3 months old! WTHeck? LOL

I am so sorry you lost Scar. At least he was not alone and you were able to love him as he went peacefully.

Should I be mixing bleach solution into my nipple watering system? I regularly disconnect the hose from the bucket and scrub the bucket out, but I have only flushed the entire system once because it takes a bit of work to take completely down and put back up.

I have just started doing so because I want to keep the girls healthy. Bleach in water is just like the chlorine we have in our own tap water which is perfectly safe to drink. The solution I use is 2c. bleach in the bottom of a gallon bottle, topped off with water; then I add an ounce of that solution per gallon of their drinking water. It's just to kill off all the nasties that chickens can get. I think it has helped their colds from progressing while I've been waiting on the antibiotics. I plan to continue doing the solution indefinitely because it won't hurt them and can pretty much only help. I know people use ACV but that didn't help my water from getting slimy and the bleach solution does. The birds also drink just fine from the water; they don't notice it at all.
