I have a free 1/2 of a 50 ib. bag of food grade diatomaceous earth. purchased it to control a little flea problem my dog had with out using chemicals, and to use with a little bit of gardening. No longer need it and want it out of my garage. You pick up. I can leave it out in front of my garage if you let me know when you would be picking it up. Please come and get it, I really want a tidy garage :)

Awesome! I'm contacting them...

So is it connected to constant water???
Thats awesome.

It's attached to a food-grade bucket that is sitting high on a shelf. I repurposed an old cake decorating icing bucket from Albertsons. So, I do have to fill it, and clean the bucket out from dust that falls on top, but I'm not dealing with poopy water any more!

A home filter won't remove the chlorine or flouride. They are dissolved in the water. Yes the bleach water helps keep the nasties from growing in waterers especially in thewarm weather.
Ive heard that to be true for flouride, but lots of home filtration systems (atleast CLAIM) to remove chlorine.

But anyway, the purpose is to keep the waterers clean then? Thats why you add the bleach?

oh ok. I see. Thats still neat. I know you can buy nipple waterers for pigs that hook straight up to a water source.

That would be so cool! And probably over the top for three hatchery chickens. I can imagine my husband's eyes rolling - "Honey, can we attach the nipples to the water supply so I can be really lazy with the chickens?" (He gave me a bit of grief over the automatic door opener...

HAHA! YES That might be a bit over the top for 3. Im guessing they dont blast through more than 5 gallons a day.

What about a fresh trickling fountain?

It's mostly because when you have many birds drinking from the same fount, they are dipping their beaks in and immediately contaminating the water; disease spreads rapidly if there isn't something strong to kill off the germies. It also gets in the birds and can act as a medicine or preventative of sorts for long term care. I got all this info from ChickieLady. If you PM me your e-mail address I'm happy to send you the issue she sent me of a poultry mag with some tips for maintaining a flock by Dr. Everett here in WA; his solution is MUCH stronger than the one she uses and told me to use and I've been doing something in between; I think his solution is a full Tbsp of bleach per gallon of drinking water if they're well birds, and 2Tbsp or an ounce per gallon if they're sick, to manage the illness. At first I thought it was crazy talk but the more I realize how it is helping my birds from getting sicker or spreading things around, I have kept it up. The doc who wrote about the bleach solution is also here on BYC by the username 'Saladin'
