I would use nipples if I had only one bird. 8 to 10 birds will go through 5 gallons in about a week.
I would also use it if I only had one bird. The water stay clean. I don't have to worry if I am gone for a few days that they are going to be drinking yucky, dirty water. You can get a smaller 2 Gallon bucket. I have 2 of those in my run right now for 8 chickens. I LOVE nipple waterers!
My two new birds don't know how to use them yet and are skittish of me and the other birds so they haven't followed the leader, so to speak. I have been hesitant to remove the regular waterer as of yet. I am hoping soon!

Take the other water source out. I have been surprise at how fast young birds find the nipple and if they are with other birds that use the nipples they will learn very quick.
Yeah, all of mine did fine once one or two got it. They are just so not apart of the flock that I worry. But I will take it out tonight and see what happens in the morning. I started all of my chicks on it at about a week. (I have smaller ones for my brooders) They figure it out faster than anything!
ETA- Took the waterer out now so I could be home the next few days to observe. Hope they get it.

Hatching Egg Alert --

Incubator is filled!

I have 6 Blue Barred Rock and 6 Super Blue Egg Layer hatching eggs that just won't fit!

Shipped by DMRippy and arrived yesterday. I was counting on more of the eggs in there already not making it, but they're pretty hearty eggs, and I just can't fit this last dozen in there.

$15 for the dozen! Putting them on CL for $20 and wanted to give BYCers first take.

Takers?

I am so bumbed. A few weeks ago I told you guys that I got 5 more hens for free. Two speckled sussex, one I sold (which I have wanted for a LONG time) two RIRs and a dark Cuckoo Maran. I have been so busy this past two weeks that untill today I did not realize that I have not seen the Speckled sussexin about a week and a half. As of this morning now all of them are gone. They had decided to sleep outside of the coop on a pile of tree branches and now they are gone. Dang cyotes!!!!! I was planning on grabing those girls at night and putting them in the coop but again I have been really busy, well now I am paying for not finding time.

Also I have some really odd news. I have a White Leghorn hen....and she is acting BROODY! What no lady, you are not supose to do that. What the crud. Plus I already have one broody sitting on nothing for the last few weeks. Every time I would give her eggs she would leave them and go to another nest that was empty, that is why I have not bought any eggs for her as I would not want to waist money on the eggs for her to just leave them.

I dunno hon, we in Bawlmore say we "warsh the clothes in the zink". Then we go and werter the lawn hon.

The above is not being a smart *****, it is Baltimoreze at its finest. Everyone calls everyone Hon. There are more smashing of words but I really don't want to go into it. Every region has its colloquialisms. Yeah, I'm a Bawlamoron, my home town and every now and then I miss it.
That's where I lived for four years when I first came to this country! I couldn't understand a word!

By Nature, love your watering system. Seems like it would be easier for birds because they have to raise their heads to swallow and pecking at the nipples they are already in that position.

Your chickens sure enjoy it. Like listening to the chickens talking - wonder what they are saying.Probably "move over, it's my turn"

It could be " I wish that big oaf would give us back our old water bowl" LOL. For some reason unknown to me there would rather drink from a dirty puddle then a clean nipple.
