Well, every year, the people in the know, those"scientific" folks, come up with something different. One year eggs are bad for you, then carbs, then fat, but then fat is good, and then carbs are good; don't eat b-b-q, eat more fish . . . .and so on.

So, all I'm going to do is eat fruit and veggies, and home raised meat and eggs and avoid all the icky stuff I don't like, such as processed and fast food.

After all, half the time, half the scientists say one thing, and the other half disagrees; it's impossible to know who is right anymore. Same with nutritionists, which is why there are so many CONFLICTING books on diets and nutrition by EXPERTS.

In the pursuit of my master's degree, we read tons of scientific papers on a variety of subjects. We were schooled to look at methods, statistical analysis, experimental design and other factors. One professor had us look at the sponsors of the subject matter. He didn't come right out and say it, but the implication was that the funding sponsor "might" have influenced how the study was reported.

Think about it. If my research is sponsored by a particular interest, I am not likely to find results that contradict the agenda of that group.

That is so true. I remember one of my professor told us to question everything we were ever told. "Trust no-one" he said. So I don't. I'm not sure I even trust me half the time.

"Lies, **** lies, statistics". It can prove anything.

So, the number of backyard suburban chickens raisers has more than doubled in the past year. Insanity in suburbia has more than doubled in the past year. So, does raising backyard chickens in suburbia cause insanity, or does insanity cause people to raise backyard chickens in suburbia?

We'll never know!

Ooooh, sounds wonderful!
Totalcolour has an amazing setup for all her animals, and an equally amazing setup for processing them. She's also a fabulous cook and winemaker, so a party at her house is well worth going to.

We just know there is a strong correlation.

I was making Scotch eggs because we are going out crabbing on the boat tomorrow. I was getting some breadcrumbs out of the pantry, and knocked the shelf, and everything came tumbling out. It's such a mess. And worse still MGSU cleaned it last night (the floor) because of all the duck feathers he got all over the place (but the duck was tasty).

I can't get the shelf back on (it's on some kind of slider thing) so have to wait till himself comes back.

The duck eggs were too fresh (today's haul) so they didn't peel really well after I boiled them.

The dog has half a dead duck she refuses to leave outside (I keep tossing it out). Still got feathers on the remains. It was a cull from yesterday (not the one we ate, a smaller one), Himself gave it to the dog, who has eaten the wings, head and feet and one breast. I heard himself earlier with the blower getting rid of the feather from the deck. She's pretty good at plucking them, but she's not very good at putting them in the trash

And now there's blood on the deck, so it will have to be washed again (only done last week).

I prefer to believe that suburbia is the cause of insanity and raising my chickens is the simplest form of therapy. But then my friends all think I am crazy so...

An outbreak of salmonella poisoning is spreading across the nation, with more cases reported in Washington than any other state, U.S. health officials said Saturday.

So far, 37 people in 11 states have been infected with the salmonella strain, which has been linked to live poultry from a hatchery in Idaho.

Nine of those infected are in Washington state. Two cases have also been reported in Arizona, one in California, three in Colorado, five in Idaho, two in Illinois, five in Oregon, two in Tennessee, one in Texas, five in Utah and two in Wyoming.

No one has died so far from the outbreak, but eight of the victims have been hospitalized, the U.S. Centers for Disese Control reported. Some 37 perent of illnesses are in children 10 years old or younger.

Laboratory findings and investigations have linked the outbreak to contact with live poultry from a mail-order hatchery in Idaho, which sells chicks, ducklings and other live poultry. The hatchery is not being named at the request of state authorities, CDC officials said.

Health officials said it's also possible that the number of cases could increase over time because there is a delay of two or three weeks between the time a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported.

Nearly nine of 10 victims of the salmonella outbreak reported contact with live poultry before becoming ill.

CDC officials say live poultry infected with salmonella can appear healthy and clean, but still shed germs that can make people sick.

Because live poultry from the affected hatchery may live in backyard flocks for long periods of time, people are advised to follow the advice to consumers issued by the CDC.
