I'd still use tweezers....they just gross me out !

I make them 'wiggle' at the end of my fingers so they look- sort of- alive to the chickens. They snatch them up right away :)

OMG they are so CUTE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look like little stuffed animals !!!!!!!!!!!
love.gif

They do but especially my Logan- he is a whopping 3 lbs and looks just like a wind-up toy!! So flippin' cute that you just want to squeeze him to death! He has an amazing temperament to boot-- the best that I have ever bred. Honestly though, even though he is within Standard (for size) I do wish he were a pound bigger.

OMG!!!!! Did I Miss something????????????

I just was in the store They had a 5 gallon bucket of BOSS that was damaged and were selling it for $8.00.. so I figured I could use it up. I go thru the cashier line and the lady asked me what kind of birds I was feeding? I smiled and said "its for my chickens". She flipped out!!!!!

She said "That is for BIRDS... not chickens.... Chickens eat chicken food" I was in a good mood this morning because I had just purchased all my feed for a month and did it with the money I have gotten from selling eggs so I was a pretty happy camper.

So I tried to explain to her that I feed the BOSS as a treat to my birds and its really good for them , protein, oil for feathers etc. She asked if I mixed it into their food ... I said No Its just a treat i toss to them. They get their food free style in a feeder. Again I smiled really big at her..

As I paid she says again.. and I quote "Chickens should get chicken feed.. Its people like you that are the reason we have the Bird Flu because your not following natures way!!"

I looked at my 15 year old daughter that was with me and she was laughing and said "Gheesh mom.. how could you!!" (sarcastically of course). I started chuckling and decided the time and place was not fitting for a debate with this lady.. So I smiled told her that maybe if she did a Google search about feeding BOSS to chickens it would ease her mind.. I wished her a wonderful afternoon and we left..

Just thought I d share with other chicken friendly peeps :)

As my Daddy used to say, "There's no fix'n stupid..........."

The ignorance, of some people, never ceases to amaze me. What is so sad it that your child KNEW she was smarter!! LOL!

Hello everyone, haven't been on for over 2 weeks - yikes! Vacationing and other stuff going on. Been REALLY busy.

Got ducks galore, getting a new bunny in a coupla days (Champagen D'Argent, bred to a Florida White for meat babies), traded a goat for a bespoke Changing screen (you know, the tri-fold old fashioned ones you used to get dressed behind). Been out on the boat - took visiting family to the Pt Defiance Zoo/Aqaurium . . . ton of stuff.

Oh, and got a new gadget - hubby bought us Androids! Our last phones were almost 15 years old and all they did was make phone calls. Who knew

I like that it's got a camera, video recorder, kindle reader, email, GPS, and a ton of other stuff. But one app I really like is the bar code reader, so I can go through the pantry and make a shopping list just scanning bar-codes off the bottles, bags and cans! Super cool.

Going out today in the boat again, then himself is off to Arizona on Thursday - dove hunting. Mmm Mmmm Mmm!

This sounds cool, can you tell me the name of the App? There are just so many apps that do something with bar codes.

Thanks!!

Sheila :)

It's wonderful that you were able to make the best out of a bad situation! My property is 2.33acres but the main living areas in my house are not very big. I dream of having Pyrs, Newfies, etc., but I can't get the hubby on board...yet! Currently, I have a super sweet Am. Cocker who is only 20lbs (the smallest dog I've every owned) and an Aussie/GSD mix (53lbs), who NEEDS A JOB!! I suffer from some health troubles too and don't have much energy to maintain huge hairy dogs right now and my high-maintenance cocker wears me out as I do her grooming to save some dough. I have considered possibly trying a Pom and would prefer to have one first before getting a giant to encourage "seniority" of the Pom...if I get one. Around here, most I've seen are backyard breeder dogs with unstable temperments so I plan on taking time to consider my situation, shorten my breed wish-list, and start researching breeders before getting another family member!

When you are ready, drop me a PM and I can give you some breeder names. The right breeder is just as important as the right Breed or the right dog. You should have a good feeling, for them, as they should be someone that you can turn to for the rest of the animals life (mine have a contract that if the new owners should not be able to keep the dog- whatever the reason- the dog comes back to me. My responsibility- to my puppies- is for their lifetime).

I still have people, that I placed Mals puppies with 16 years ago, come to me for another when their last dog passed.

Poms are easy to maintain. I brush mine out, while watching TV. I can go for a month, between brushings (if it's a dog that I am not showing). But when I do groom, I brush all the way down to the skin. My dogs fall asleep while I am doing it and I find it very relaxing.

They are not a dog for everyone though, just as Mals are not. A good breeder, of whatever Breed you choose, should be honest with you on the good and the bad. Making sure potential puppy people understand both helps to make sure that the puppy you place today will still be in that same, happy, home when they pass.

Such a chicken dilema! Not sure what breed to get our where to find it!

We have five hens (well, two of them are almost hens, should be laying any day now) and I desperately want three more as that is the legal limit here in Seattle, we need more eggs, and chickens are just awesome. I can't decide if I want to try my hand for the first time at raising chicks or just get started pullets again. I want light-eating top-notch layers who are excellent foragers and crazy/flighty/smart enough to survive our dogs, who do occasionally misbehave and chase chickens. I have my heart set on LF Hamburgs because they are so cool-looking and they definitely fit the bill, though I worry about integrating them into our flock because they are such a small breed and I've heard they don't tend to stick up for themselves much in a mixed flock. The two Leghorns I added back in mid-June, the ones who are at POL now, are definitely at the bottom of the pecking order but they have done just fine for themselves and there has been very, very little pecking from our two Wyandottes, and our Welsummer, who is the flock leader, has taken a particular shine to the little Leghorns, even gets protective of them sometimes. Our three big hens aren't very aggressive but I do worry that the two Leghorns might give any newcomers a run for their money.

I recently emailed with the guy at Baxter Barn in Fall City and save for a few blue pullets he does not have any more Hamburgs until spring chicks. Blue is nice but I definitely want more than one color variety, and he will have more varieties in spring (including rare colors one can't get from hatcheries!). I guess I should wait until then, but I'm sure some of y'all know how it is when you have your heart set on a particular breed now, ya know? Availability isn't the only limiting factor as my boyfriend needs to build a bigger coop first, which he promises he'll do "soon", LOL. He also thinks we should just get more Leghorns since the two we recently got have done so well here and he knows I'll freak out if I see anything other than the very mildest forms of pecking-order-establishing.
roll.png
The problem with getting more Leghorns is that the only variety with interesting plumage that is easy to come by around here seems to be Exchequer, which is what we already have and like I said, I want more variety.

So, am I crazy to want Hamburgs? Would they get bullied too much? Are there other places in WA or OR to find LF Hamburgs or rare types of Leghorns? I heard Stumpfarmer has Hamburgs, but I haven't heard back from her/him (granted, it's only been a few days, but like I said, I have that want-chickens-NOW syndrome, LOL).

Thank you so very much. Like I told Ron, I am just waiting for my DF to call me back when she gets off work tonight and then I can PM you and set up day and time for me to come get them from you!

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts on the situation, and I understand not everyone can give up or sell hens at a moments notice. This is such a GREAT group of people, I don't know what I would do with out everyone here. Special thanks to RonB and to KMHunter!

I just recently found out that Renton changed it's regs, and I'm now allowed 8. Feeling that tug of chicken math myself. I have 5 now, but 1 or 2 are roos and will have to go away.
I can't help you with Hamburgs, but can tell you that raising chicks is pretty straightforward and easy. It is also messy, dusty, and smelly. Lol

Oh duh, the quail section! Thank you very much, I am not quite sure why that did not come to mind. I will try and post there too.
I completely agree. When my friend has a day off I am going to go over there and talk to DF's neighbor and see what I can come up with.
Again I agree, DF's boyfriend fell for all of the crap before talking to me or my DF and he is the one who put the dog down. My SIL and I were talking just now and we came up with the same idea that even if the dog had gone after the chickens it would only be one or two of them, not 5 chickens and 10 quail. Also with the fact that the dog had no blood on her at all! I will definatly be talking to the neighbor. I will let you guys know what I find out.

But like I said if any one has any laying hens they would be willing to sell me to help her just PM me. Thanks everyone!

I have a close friend that this happened to. It was 2 dogs on her property and knocked out a good 75+ birds. chickens, ducks, guineas, even a couple full sized turkeys. The dogs were shot in the act as it was happening.
It was HORRIFIC. Bodies scattered from one end of the property to the other.
hit.gif

I helped clean up and it was soooo sad.

It doesnt take long, and its not like a cyote or wild animal where they come in and get it to eat it. Its not un common for there to be no blood. So it is very possible, 1 dog could take down 15 birds, But you wouldnt want to put down the dog, just by assumtion!

Its really sad for everyone involved. I wouldnt have put the dog down if it wasnt caught in the act though. Too bad they didnt talk it out before considering that.

Is the neighbor even willing to take donated birds? Or are they wanting to purchase their own?

To everyone that commented about the BOSS and the cashier lady... I had a good laugh reading your comments.. That was just a riot to have her say that and the Look she gave me. I used to get so mad at peoples ignorance... but I geuss Im getting older or more "Zen" in my age.. Now I just kinda feel sorry for them.. Like someone said "You cant fix Stupid!!!"............................................................

Its funny that you said that about making them wiggle I do that with the dried ones I have... When I did the hens ran off to the corner of the run.. Silly girls!! I also have my 8 year old Niece and 7 year old Nephew convinced that when you put them into the light they "come alive" because when I grab a handfull out of the bag I make them wiggle at the kids also.. LOL Last week someone told my Niece if she soaked the worm it would rehydrate and come alive... A couple days later to my dismay I found 3 little jar lids in the fridge all with soaking meal worms LOL.. Gave me a good laugh.
