Hi all,

Just a couple thoughts on todays topics:

I have read several threads on the rat bucket trap and a couple things that others have mentioned is that the sunflower seeds work better if the rat cannot see the water, so a solid layer floating in the water.
You can put a piece of wood leaning against the bucket so the rats can get into it easier. And or across the top of the bucket.
The water cannot be high enough for the rat to clamber out.

Rats can be a danger to chicks and eggs. And it is occasionally reported that they will go after chickens especially at night/dark and in groups. (In the dark chickens may just roost and get eaten alive)

And just for fun- The old stories about rats coming up your plumbing into your toilet is true. I had to rescue a neighbor several years ago from a rat in her toilet. She discovered it after she was done.

About frostbite:
It is possible for frostbite to occur at any temp below freezing. It will happen faster if it is colder or drafty, or wet. Combs, wattles and feet are at risk. We are fortunate (on the west side) that we rarely get dangerous conditions. There are a multitude of things that can effect it like breed, size of comb and wattles, age and condition of the chicken, the coop and roosts & more. You really need to look at your own set-up and plan accordingly. Better to be prepared than posting HELP!

I have read on here that they way things are said on this thread is passive-aggressive.

Just to clarify, there are rules of conduct and etiquette on this website that we are all supposed to live by while on here. If that comes off as passive aggressive then that is just the way it is.
I would gladly tell it like it is and not sugar coat it if I didn't think it would get me kicked off here eventually.
I am not a passive-aggressive person.
I have a mom that is and have worked very hard not to be. Including counseling.
In "real life" I will tell you what I think even if it is not the popular opinion.
I do have to get to know someone first to be that blunt. And I was also taught to be considerate and polite.
But with that said, the people I know personally on here are NOT passive-aggressive.

Just my thoughts and opinions. Nobody has to agree with it. But I wish we could stop bickering.
It gets really old, really fast.

First,
welcome-byc.gif
to all the new people.

I'm very excited. Always am for new babies. I just love them.

We have 8 new chicks. I hope they all grow up into hens that lay lots of blue eggs.

This one is a little blurry, sorry. Had to snap quick and it's with the phone.

Aw, how sweet they are!

Gotta love the chipmunk EEs!

Quote: I hope ALL understand that I AM NOT picking on ANYBODY here. But since this is current I am simply using it as an example. See this is how problems can start. One person is dealing with some rough times. Others don't know that and then things can turn sour and rarely was there any intention. Now I know that many people prefer to keep their life "private" and that is their choice. However some times by a little bit of info being shared it helps to understand each other.
Trust me I have some of the greatest friends right here and have turned to them in (what I felt were) some pretty dark times. We can, should and most if not all of us will help each other if we know the need and what we can do to help.

For the record, I never said anyone or anything here was passive-aggressive. But it is my lifelong observation that some folks, particularly in the PNW, and particularly Christians, think any form of direct, unapologetic dissent is rude. It was that line of thinking that got me chastised when I first started posting in this thread regularly (and no, it wasn't my first post!).

:thumbsup   That's what I do.  I was afraid to post that for fear of being condemned for chucking a dead rat into the landfill.  :lau

I bag them up and toss them in the trash. I'd prefer the dogs not eat them, though I can't stop them from eating what they catch when I'm not watching. They both are better than me at digging in our soil when it's dry in summer.

Sorry. I do not think Mikey was trying to be sarcastic or condescending. THAT ISN'T Mikey's Style.

I didn't take it that way. I took it as poking fun but not in a mean way. Hopefully this doesn't turn into another conflict.
She apologized, which is why I removed my post. As Cloverleaf said, "move on."
