When I have bullies I have multiple feed dishes.
When I have treats I throw them every where so everyone gets a chance.

If you are free ranging on 2 acres I can't imagine yours don't have what they need for winter.
Chickens may be dumber then a box of rocks sometimes but animals have a real good built in idea what they need to do for winter.
Only time that doesn't happen is when not enough food isn't available for wild animals some seasons.
Well, the younger ones haven't really started to range very far yet and they are more cautious as it is new to them so I will put a bowl of chick start in the coop for them when the others range, but many times they hear the bag and come running so I have to be sneaky! I just want the youngsters to get their protein.

Nothing to apologize for. I am the one who feels rather stupid.

Unfortunately yes. 24/7. I can not remember not being out of pain. I think it was a day in 1985- but don't quote me on it- and today is a very high pain day that meds are barely making a dent in.

Still no excuse for my behavior and I feel terrible. I know that I hate reading bickering and drama and not loving the fact that I did both today :(

Is it Friday yet???

Sheila :)

I think I can understand the pain thing. Some days you can push thru and "ignore" it. My prob is that I tend to overdo it on good days and then have a string of bad ones I CAN'T push thru. It makes me very grumpy sometimes!!

Again I'm giving my DH props. Somehow we've got from a LF layer flock of 10 chickens to 20 of various sizes and ages since last May. (Although there are at least 7 cockerels we're going to get rid of soon.) He never complains when MY chicken raising involves extra chores that I need help with occasionally, he hasn't griped as I'm shelling out $$ for more and more feed, didn't blink when I spent our money for materials for the new coop this summer and has generally been a wonderful guy when it comes to my obsessive hobby. Every once in a while he'll ask "What do we have these little chickens for again? Where are they staying?" when he's referring to the Seramas who are living in his computer room, but then I'll see him cuddling one of the little roosters and asking him "How you doing big guy"? when he doesn't know I'm looking.

These are things I need to remember the next time I'm COMPLETELY exasperated with him. If I say it out loud maybe I'll remember!
YOU ARE SOOOO LUCKY!! Mine doesn't hate them...unless his shop is left open and they poop in there!

He is just jealous of the time I spend with them!!

There are things people can do in the country, or in Eastern WA that would not be acceptable in my yard, in my city or to my neighbors. Yet, I have felt the sting of criticism on here, as well, by people who live on acreage.

I wish people here would begin to look beyond their own ideas of what they believe should be right for everyone, based on their own viewpoint, and begin to welcome everyone to this thread and make it a challenge to see the world from multiple points of view.

Whether right or wrong - it is my thoughts on the subject.
I'm truly sorry if I have ever made you feel criticized!!!!!!!!!!! If I remember right I went off on a tangent when I heard how restricted you were with your animals when you were talking about the indian reservation fireworks (was that you??). Everybody has different tolerances for different things and preferences for different ways they live and I'll be the first to say living in the country is NOT for everyone! I would be the last one to have any right to tell anyone how they should live. I just tend to freely throw out my opinions about how I AND I ALONE want to live and do not mean to criticize others for living differently.

As previously stated by others, typed words are extremely hard to decifer intentions from especially when those, like me, have never met anyone of you in person!! B.t.w., I am truly envious of many of the houses, yards and coops I have seen from those in the suburbs!!

For the record, I never said anyone or anything here was passive-aggressive. But it is my lifelong observation that some folks, particularly in the PNW, and particularly Christians, think any form of direct, unapologetic dissent is rude. It was that line of thinking that got me chastised when I first started posting in this thread regularly (and no, it wasn't my first post!).

And just so you know I wasn't accusing you if calling me passive aggressive.
I have just heard that word used toward a few including myself before.
I guess I don't see it as passive aggressive, even though it technically is.
My mom was so bad and it was mean. So this seems so mild, that maybe it doesn't even register with me. Lol!
I guess that is the definition of desensitization!

Bah, I still can't figure out how to quote multiple posts from different pages. And what's this I hear about removing posts? How is that possible?!? I'm soooooo bad at technology and the internet!

Anyway, what I think you said was something like, "It has been said that some posts here are passive-aggressive" or something like that. And since I was the only one who had brought up the term "passive-aggressive" at that point, I assumed, reasonably so IMO, that you were referring to me. I understand now that you weren't.

Nope. Believe me, you aren't the only one and I have had someone call me that directly.
I seem to have a hard time being clear on this thread.
I should have been clear on that point in my original post.
Sorry. :)
Replying via my phone takes so much more time! Good thing I am stuck in traffic on my way to a Seahawks game!

I understand. Have fun at the game! I live very close to the stadium district, so you are right in my neck of the woods.

Thanks! Could someone please contact the DOT and tell them to pull their head out of their hind quarters and open the carpool lanes going west bound? There is NO traffic going East!

Is there anyone on the north side of Seattle who builds custom coops for a reasonable price? I've been trying to get this project going, but every time I want to go work on it something gets in the way. I haven't been able to do anything this week thanks to short or nonexistent naps (I have a 2 years old, I dare not bring him with me when I'll use power tools) and having to work on plans and prep for a big trip later this year. I am really feeling the time crunch since it's getting cooler every night.

Anyone know of someone good who doesn't charge an arm and a leg? I can't buy a premade one in the size I need, it won't fit through the gates!

You cannot remove a post, only BYC staff can.

You can edit your post down to 1 character, like a period mark. The edit button is the pencil at the bottom. Click on it and you will be able to change your post, then submit again.

Multiple quotes are a different beast altogether as many of us have discovered.

First go to
-your profile
-edit account details
scroll down and make sure the option
-remove nested quotes is unchecked

To do multi quotes
-Click on the Multi quote button on any post
-then scroll up or down and click on the Quote (not the multi) button for any other posts you would like to quote also.

They will all be gathered together. Just last night I discovered that the order the quote buttons are clicked doesn't matter. They all end up in the same order they were originally posted.

Last option is to highlight, Copy & Paste.

Russ- hope this helps

On the lower left corner of each post you create you will see a little pencil icon (next to the red flag). Click on that and your post will open and you can make changes to it. I've used it, in the past, to correct spelling- when I posted too fast and then realized I had words typed that really didn't look right. I also used it to add something to a post. It will also allow you to remove everything you typed. You can not delete the post, itself, but all that would be left is that you modified it on such 'n such date/time.

For doing multiple posts: Click on "Multi icon in lower right corner of each post (no matter what page) that you would like in your post. On the last one, choose the "Quote icon. When you click on the "Quote icon, all of the seperate posts, you wish to address, will be in one response.

Hope that helps!

Sheila :)

I am a new chicken owner in NE Seattle!  I have three girls, around 4-6 months old--Blanche, a white leghorn, Ginger, a red sex link, and Buffy, a Buff Orpington.

Welcome! we must be neighbors :) I'm right by Northgate Mall

Hi all,

Just a couple thoughts on todays topics:

I have read several threads on the rat bucket trap and a couple things that others have mentioned is that the sunflower seeds work better if the rat cannot see the water, so a solid layer floating in the water.
You can put a piece of wood leaning against the bucket so the rats can get into it easier. And or across the top of the bucket.
The water cannot be high enough for the rat to clamber out.

Rats can be a danger to chicks and eggs. And it is occasionally reported that they will go after chickens especially at night/dark and in groups. (In the dark chickens may just roost and get eaten alive)

And just for fun- The old stories about rats coming up your plumbing into your toilet is true. I had to rescue a neighbor several years ago from a rat in her toilet. She discovered it after she was done. :gig

About frostbite:
It is possible for frostbite to occur at any temp below freezing. It will happen faster if it is colder or drafty, or wet. Combs, wattles and feet are at risk. We are fortunate (on the west side) that we rarely get dangerous conditions. There are a multitude of things that can effect it like breed, size of comb and wattles, age and condition of the chicken, the coop and roosts & more. You really need to look at your own set-up and plan accordingly. Better to be prepared than posting HELP!

Russ
