We formed our own club because we had a core group of families who did lots of other things and didn't want to make 4H a focus. We meet in the Spring for a while, do the fair, and adjourn until next Spring. We do poultry only, so it's easy. Kids are in Boy Scouts, sports, lots of stuff besides 4H.

Our kids are are in a lot, too. In past years, they've participated in 3 sports/year, along with scouts and Camp Fire. I had to give up something, so I quit leading Camp Fire. Now we're down to Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts - and in January, they will play Basketball. My daughter is the only one who will play Little League in Spring (thank goodness!). She's pretty athletic, so we will let her play as long as she gives her best, and still wants to. I'd like to do 4-H as a family project, if possible. I'll have to call in and see if they will allow that.

RR always responds....eventually. LOL Sometimes they take days or weeks. It's best to just call them or use the website, however lacking it may be. I always just call and somebody can help me. You're going to love your Wyandottes! Mine just started laying this week and suddenly she is a new chicken! She has been totally standoffish and weird since I got her, and now she comes right up to me and stands there waiting to be petted and coddled ;) It's adorable and I'm so happy she's finally letting me handle her! I realllllllly want some Blue Laced Red Wyandottes too...but I don't think I could take away my chickens' favorite nesting spot (and the only one they use) which is inside a rabbit hutch to brood chicks there instead. I think DH would just kill me if I set some up in the bathtub as well.

Gah, it's the same with barnevelders, unless I want to pay lots of $$. I'm going to see what I can get. Whatever I do, I will buy extras to make sure I get girls, and the extra pullets and the cockerels will be posted here first when they grow up!

Bleh. I'm so fickle!!!! I still can't decide on supplemental lighting this winter. All my girls are first year pullets but I'm so worried that if I don't supplement that we'll be feeding 11 chickens all winter and still buying eggs. We go through 3.5 dozen eggs a week on average. Right now, that's what we're getting from 7 confirmed layers and 2 that may or may not be laying sporadically, though I don't think they've started at all. I just worry that my poor 14 week olds will technically reach laying age at the end of October and won't actually start due to lack of light until March when they're 8-9 months old! That would royally suck. SOOOO, this is for those on the wet and icky side: DO YOU USE SUPPLEMENTAL LIGHTING? If not, do your first year pullets still lay reliably during the winter as long as they aren't molting?
