Quote: During the roughly first 12 weeks, you can actully see the chicks grow. They make remarkable changes in the first weeks. Then the become rather scraggly teenagers. I must admit that I love to watch them grow. I have a 4x4 pen that I set up in my garage. So far most chicks thrive in the environment. I too have had a very close neighbor loose all their chicken to a fire caused by the wrong type of light. It was limited to their newly built coop,at least.

This past spring I finally set up 30 meat bird chicks in an area of my chickens run. The chicks were more than happy to stay under the warm lamp.

I have used a 46 gal bow front aquarium to brood chicks in. It works for 4 to 6 chicks, for about the first 3 weeks or so. After a few weeks of having your chicks inside your house, you will begin to notice a fairly high volume of white dust. It isn't very good to breath in the dust. So for me I try to limit the time the chicks live in the house.

A while back, my mom ran outside to find a Red-tailed hawk sitting on one of my Barred Rocks! My girl was more than it was expecting and mom got out there pretty quick, so everything turned out fine. That sort of thing could have happened to Drama. It might be a good idea to leave your girls in the run for a few days to discourage the hawk. If it watches for them for a few days and doesn't see them out and about, it might look elsewhere for dinner. We have large and small hawks around here and have to consider both since our bantams are small enough for the small hawks and the big hawks can potentially grab our standards. Hopefully it won't bother your girls again!

Definitely! We decided no more free-ranging for a while unless we are out there watching them every second. We put them away for a bit, then we let them back out when both DH and I could be out there in the yard, monitoring the yard. That thing came down when I was watching the girls, so I asked him to be a second set of eyes. I was just inside the doorway of my house and they were over by the shed. I wasn't looking that way at the time, but looked up just as I heard them cackling and saw the large bird take off from ground level just about 10 feet in front of me.

I'm also 2nd guessing if I really want a translucent roof on their run now, as well. Since that thing was bold enough to land on my roof right above their run, I'm wondering if it would be too tempting for the hawk to try to mess with them, or scare them, in the run.

OK one more thing that I found SO AWESOME today. As we were leaving the sale DW ask T Hi to go down this road. she wanted to see if she could find the house she lived in as a kid. Then she says turn here and go up the hill. Then she says there it is and tells where her bedroom was etc. Now this may not sound like much. Keep in mind that it has been probably 40 + years since he lived there AND since she has had the stroke most of history is little more than a mystery.

OK good night

Oh, that is awesome! The location must have brought back memories. How sweet.

Yes, it did. I figured I could find them a home :) So you don't think 4+ week old chicks would be able to utilize the different levels??
