So, I got a little impatient. Last night I washed my hands, carefully lifted one side of the incubator lid, and snuck out a couple of eggs to candle. These were taken at the start of day 5.

Random silkie egg (didn't check the letters on top before I grabbed it):

Hooray for fertile eggs!

I do but I won't be offering any of those eggs until next spring. I'm waiting for them to settle in and I need to hatch out some more for myself, first. :) Thanks!

Thanks! I apologize if I had already asked you about it. My memory isn't what it used to be, back before we had a kid and could sleep all we wanted. I'll keep an eye out in the spring!

Hello! I'm new around here... I'm completely new to BYC raising... we are building our coop starting tomorrow and getting our wee chicks in the afternoon (we picked out two barred rock and two RIR this morning) :)

Can anyone direct me of some good places to learn more about what I should expect with my 1 weekers coming home tomorrow??

You'll be addicted in no time!!! Before I found this site, I happened upon MyPetChicken.com and they have a printable informational on starting chickens, giving recommendations, etc. I referred to it MANY times when I started out last year!

So when do they move from the indoors to the outdoors? Can they stay in the small animal cage/box while they are indoors? And I realize I can look this up (and I intend to anyhow... but you all are so handy at the moment LOL), but how long do they need supplemented heating and in what progression are they weaned off?

Rats are excellent pets. If you keep the cage cleaned regularly they hardly smell. They are smart enough to be trained. The only downside to rats is that they only live 2-3 years.

I have met several rats that were surprisingly personable!! As far as pocket pets go, I would like to have a ferret again someday!! Talk about personality!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First go round and the chicken math is already working its way in to my life! I called Wilco in Gig Harbor to ask about their GSLs and not only did they have them, they also had the Delewares I was wanting! So... we got all of them. LOL

My wee bitty flock now is made of two of each of the following: Barred Rock, Golden Sex Link, Rhode Island Red, and Deleware <3

In that same breed order, their names are: Bat-hen (like batman... LOL), Emily, Linda Lovelace (Lovie), Goldie, Jasmine, Bird, Ghost, and Penelope.

Yes, one of the birds is named Bird. That's about as creative as my 2 year old son gets LOL. And Lovie was named by my father who thought a porn star name was fitting of a bird with the word 'sex' in the breed name

This was not my idea of a good weekend. Yesterday we went to a wedding for a friend we have not seen for a few years. It was good to see the 3 people we knew for a couple minutes but just felt kind of awkward being there. I ended up checking my phone, which was on silent, and had a jarring text from a friend I used to work with. Apparently, another friend I worked with had a heart attack and stroke on Tues and died Fri afternoon. She was 28y/o!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It crushed me pretty bad. Then, of course, it made me wish we had hung out far more often than we did since we always had fun. Since I stopped working May of last year, I have found myself introverting again and have a far more vague social life than I did before, if that's possible! I've always been a bit on the shy side but feeling crappy all the time makes it even harder to get out there.
So I ended up having a few drinks...well maybe more than that...and even with a full stomach and several glasses of water last night I felt very ill today. I don't get terrible hang-overs so I think it was more stress induced than anything. Certainly the tossing/turning, bad temperature regulation I suffered from last night didn't help. Today I felt like a had a strange flu and my skin felt inflammed rather than feverish. So I was pretty worthless today and didn't even go visit my chickens (DD was sent to do the chores).
Praying I have a better tomorrow!!!
