We're planting several ornamental cherry and fruiting peach trees in our yard proper to make that area (hopefully) completely safe for them. Our established cherry looks terribly nice and isn't very tall; hawks can't sit in there and wait undetected. Plus, the main branches are low enough that my young girls like to jump up in there and pretend that they're wild birds. I try very hard to keep them out of our large field and they don't go over there for the most part. Yesterday evening, Muffet and crew discovered that there are apple trees next to the driveway bordering the field. I couldn't chase them away from the tree effectively, so I took Pudge on the Walk of Shame back over to the pen (I was just fussing at her while hugging her) and mom herded the other three with a rake.

Ooh - the rooster I gave you ADORES apples - if he finds out they are there - he'll be spending all his time there! In fact - he and the brabanter girls were often flying over our six foot fence to get to the neighbors pears that weren't even ripe!

I have lots of trees, shrubs, deck, overhang etc in my yard. I don't often see hawks, but eagles come by. The hens will disappear. I mean really disappear. (like they never existed) for a few minutes. It's kind of eerie.

Our back yard is pretty wide open. For years we have talked about attaching a trellis system to our house over the back patio and a bit beyond and growing grapes on it to help keep our house cool. The more I think about it, the more I think it would be good for the girls, too. I think DH and I will be discussing this a lot more seriously now. Maybe it could be a spring project.

Rhodie pulled that disappearing act on us! That's why I was in tears after I saw the huge bird. Drama and Caunnie came out from beneath a bush and ran over to my husband as soon as he stepped out the door (they run to him, and not me - what the heck?), but Rhodie was no where to be found. We were running around looking all over, calling for her, shaking worms - and nothing. Even though I had seen a white pile of feathers (Drama's) and not brown, I was thinking maybe Rhodie had been carried off by another bird that I didn't see or something. It took her a while to come out of hiding.

As much as I love the rain so I don't have to pay to water everything, RIGHT NOW I'm enjoying no water because I'm building a coop! Much easier to work in dry soil and when I'm dry myself! LOL

We've pretty much just let most things die this year. It didn't seem to be worth trying to keep up with it.

I only tried hard to keep my blueberries, strawberries, tomatoes, and asparagus alive. I gave up on my corn, pumpkin and everything else in my garden. But, even the blueberry plants still look toasted - but they did give us great berries this year, so I can't complain.

OK... I'm off to start working on a fresh blackberry dessert of some sort. I need to figure out what ingredients I have on hand. I picked berries this morning. Yum!
