I know I'll get a wide range of answers to 'how many nesting boxes should I have?'... so let me just ask this: Should 1 nesting box per 2 birds be sufficient?

I have 5 nesting boxes for 16 current layers. They use two of them. Now granted they are big nest boxes and I see two and three girls in the same box sometimes, but the silly things just want those boxes, none of the others. 1 box per 2 hens should be more than needed.

Is anyone else a weirdo like me and like to have a certain number of things? For me, it's even numbers. I like to buy things in twos. I bought all the chicks in two... I seriously hope all of them are hens, because it'll mess up my brain if I have only 1 of one breed while I have two of all the others LOL... That said, I wish I didn't mind having only one of each, because then I could try all these other super cool breeds of chicken without going over my city limit by tooooooo much. I'm already at 8 (limit is 6), assuming they are all hens.

I need a farm.
8=6

Sounds like a little chicken math to me.

Oh, btw chicks don't count so you still need to get 6 chickens.

I wonder if anyone has ever actually been cited for having just a few more birds than allowed? That would be comical!

I keep my LF in a different coop than my silkies. I also keep the birds that I about to breed seperate from the others. I have a RIR rooster with 6 girls, a silkie rooster with 7 girls and a black australorp rooster with 4 girls. I also got a black/lav Orpington rooster from Rainwolf which I am going to gave 4 black australorp girls just to see the mix. None of my girls are laying but they will be within a few weeks. I had to have my right knee scoped today so I will be down for a about a week.

Well I don't know if it's been tried, but it sounds like it would be hard to make it stick.

Remember:
1- Your yard is larger than it looks.

2- Always say you checked and you are legal.

3- Animal control gave you the permit.

4- They are not all chickens. Those funny looking asian ground parrots don't count.

5- Those are "Service Chickens" .

HAHAHAHA, that's classic.

PS I am going to have to add some of those asian ground parrots to my flock. I am certain that DH will love them.

Silkie = Asian ground parrot. Lot's of people can't believe they are chickens.

Can't ever have enough of those to cuddle. One of them here just doesn't ever shut up. To bad chickens don't try and mimic sounds of other animals, or I'd teach them to say a few words.

That's what I thought. At least I got 5 hours tonight. But I hate it when I can't sleep! Hope you get some.
Yep, headed that way in a few minutes. Had to wait to make sure DH got up to go to work, he was asleep in my chair when I got home. :) Sorry you're not sleeping much! That's the worst! :(
Thanks! I am calling the Doctor today. She had given me the name of something to help and I didn't write down the name. Gotta do something, most of the other things I have tried are not working. Oh well! I don't work today so I can take a nap.

Melatonin, valerian, and 5 HTP are all good. Melatonin comes in various strengths and the higher doses tend to make me (and other people) nauseous...maybe start with 1 mg and see if it helps. 5 HTP can be found at Super Supplements , GNC, health food stores or maybe the natural foods section of Fred Meyer (not sure)...it's the same component in turkey that makes you want to take a snooze after Thanksgiving dinner :) Valarian tastes AWFUL and smells bad too..I'd avoid valerian tea and stick with capsules or something. I know there are several different natural formulations that combine things like this with chamomile, etc. to help promote sleep. Read the labels and double check with your doctor :) Have you tried any of these yet?

I'm so many posts behind I don't think I'll ever catch up..unless maybe I cheat and read backwards from the end..lol
I haven't heard of 5 HTP. I have tried valerian and it didn't really do anything, and I definitely have tried melatonin. I can get to sleep just fine, but if I wake up after 4 or 5 hours, I can't get back to sleep. My Dr. recommended somethiing that I could take at that time and not feel weird or groggy. I may look into 5 HTP.
Thanks!
You're welcome...hope it helps! I've had middle of the night problems too and discovered that it is linked to eating MSG for me...too many chips = wide awake at 3AM!
