Question for those of you who have done this chicken thing long enough that you aren't checking for eggs 10 times a day

Do you check for eggs any time you feel like it, even if there's a hen in the nest boxes, or do you wait until they're all empty so you don't disturb them? Sometimes when I go out there there's hens in the nest boxes and most of the time I leave them alone; I guess I'm afraid of scaring them out of the box and missing out on an egg for the day. Will they just come back if they're ticked off that I disturbed them?
If there is a hen in the nest box, I leave her alone. If I happen to startle one and they leave the nest, they usualy come back. Their body is telling them they need to lay an egg and they know you, so they should come back. I don't check multiple times per day anymore. Gets old walking up and down my little hill that many times.

I check later in the afternoon and sometimes after they have gone to roost. If it is during the work week, I check when I get home, and as it gets darker earlier, that is after they have gone to bed.
Don't worry, you won't scare them from laying, they know and recognize you. Check as much as you want!

We don't have nest boxes; ours just lay wherever they feel like it along the perimeter of the fence. I don't bother them while they're laying, but if I do happen to come near they hiss like crazy and make all kinds of sounds like they're possessed by a demon or something!

Thanks! I have been reaching under them sometimes for eggs and occasionally one will leave and I never know if she comes back or not; we just don't have all day to spend out there observing what they do half the time, LOL! What's nice is the chickens whose eggs I really know well; My 2 laying EEs, my olive egger, Welsummer, BCM...I always know if they laid that day, but everyone else I have no clue whose eggs are whose because they're all too similar in color (light tan)!

Rhodie's are getting lighter and Drama's are getting darker. I'm beginning to wonder who's who's now, too. If they both lay, I can usually figure it out - the lightest, or more speckled one will be Drama's. But, if both of them don't lay, I don't know who laid.

Does anyone know where I can get one of these locally for cheaper than this? I really want an egg skelter so I don't have to refrigerate my own eggs. I just LOVE these ones!!

Why don't you have to refrigerate your eggs if they are in an egg skelter?

I learned a little trick from CR... I started to lightly write the date laid on the egg with a pencil. Now we are always assured of eating the oldest egg first.

mine do.
Some get more irritated than others.
Some will peck lightly but let me reach under them anyways.
Some of my hens will stand up & let me reach under them...depends on the breed.
