I don't know if anyone remembers but, awhile back I asked for help b/c my girls would not lay in our nesting boxes. Well many of you offered your advice, ideas and expertise on the issue. We totally re-did our boxes, took the old out and did a completely new idea and went with a wooden frame with holes cut out and then put big 5 gal buckets (laying down) in the holes to use as the nests and added roosts in front of the buckets so they could check them out w/out having to get in. Ya, that flopped too. They don't like them at all. I saw that idea somewhere on here and loved it, DH loved it even more but the girls...they didn't love it.
This is getting so frustrating, we were getting 2-3 eggs a day and now, I *might* get 2 a day out of 5 hens. Today though, I didn't find any at all. I can lock them in but then they just lay on the floor and bury the eggs w/the shavings and that is so super awesome!!

I thought someone said that they aren't picky...that someone obviously hasn't met my chickens.

Any ideas? Is this normal, to have this difficult of a time to get them to lay in the box? Do we just keep trying new ideas or are my girls a lost cause?

My answer probably won't help.
For a year, my original girls laid in the nice comfy boxes. The new hens, once they started, laid in a corner on the floor. Now it is hit or miss where I find the eggs. Some are in the boxes and some are on the floor in the corner. Even the old box girls will lay on the floor if the nest box is occupied.

All except for my BO, who must lay in the same box each day whenever she is ready. She will toss out any hen who is there if she is ready to lay. I've been watching this behaviour all summer long.

I don't know if it is a breed thing or a dominance thing. But it is certainly interesting to observe. As long as they are laying, I am happy.

Hi SadieSue! Where abouts in Tacoma are ya?? We just moved back here from Iowa and are over by 15th and Trafton. Had no idea there were big yards so close to downtown, but we have no complaints!

Just getting ready for my first flock of gals, I would like to have a buff silkie, those birds are just too precious! Yours are such cuties! Maybe there should be a south sounders meeting

I could do a south Sound thing...not trying to be creepy or anything, but I bet I could walk to your place in all of five minutes from mine

OK, actually, general rule of thumb is that if the eggs go in after noon, count the next day as day 1, so I would say that tomorrow should really be day 21.....so I would leave it in there until later tomorrow at the earliest before you try to help any more......how's the humidity in there? If the humidity is too high, they can drown before they start pipping/zipping......might be the little bugger has some fluid in there and that's what you are hearing? My first 3-4 hatches in an LG were so unsuccessful, that I went with the dry hatch method for my following hatches using the LG and it seemed to work better. I'd have 3-4 thermometers and 3-4 hygrometers in there and they'd all read something different. Now I just use it as a hatcher!!!!

Good luck!!!! I gotta head to bed!! Sleep tight everybody!!!

Yeah, I have three thermometers in there and I've found that it has warm and cool spots. My hygrometer says 55% right now, but who knows? Both top vents are open and there is no fogging on the windows. There is water in the bottom tray and in the saucer with the sponge. It's good to know about the counting delay. That makes me feel hopeful.
Sorry to hear...I hope the rest hatch well for you.

Thank you.

Just finished the same movie again. It's great! It was a 48 hour rental and I'm cheap...gotta get my money out of it!

(Snow White and the Huntsman if anyone didn't catch that yesterday).

14. What is normal behavior when chicks hatch? Do they come out immediately, or take a rest after they pip?

Thanks!

Jennifer

I don't know - this is my first time hatching. But, I have read that they pip and something has to dry out before they can hatch, so my guess would be they take a rest.

It takes a lot of energy to get out, so a bit of rest is fine and normal.
Like all of Nature, the fittest survive the best.
