I don't know - this is my first time hatching. But, I have read that they pip and something has to dry out before they can hatch, so my guess would be they take a rest.

It takes a lot of energy to get out, so a bit of rest is fine and normal.
Like all of Nature, the fittest survive the best.

Thanks! Well, we're off to bed. Here's hoping they are okay and I have a birthday present waiting for me in the incubator when I get up. (Bday isn't for another week, but still....)

Didn't you already have a "birthday"? Anything after is just an anniversary.

You know that new exit they built on I-90, close by that big parking garage? (142nd?) There is a building close by there that has "Windermere" on it? That's where my company's Bellevue office is located. I get over there every other month or so.

14. What is normal behavior when chicks hatch? Do they come out immediately, or take a rest after they pip?

Thanks!

Jennifer
I imagine they are very tired.
Hard work getting out of that shell.
In fact, your post brought back a memory of one of my favorite photos from Chickielady.
Took me a bit but I found it and here it is.
CL - love this photo so much!!! So, so funny.
I'd buy the BYC calendar if they used this photo!
(I hope it's not against any rules for me to go back and find CL's photo and repost.
Someone let me know if it is...)

Before I order this heated pet bowl - can anyone chime in on if it is a good one? I have Prime, so I can get shipping for free. $23.22 seems reasonable to me.

And... all that chatter about egg storage - now you guys got me shopping!

I was reading up on egg storage and learned that reusing old egg cartons might not be safe because bacteria from each egg can be deposited on the boxes. So, now I'm thinking about buying this cute little porcelain tray to fit in my fridge. My egg compartment has a clear plastic door, so I think it will be safe enough to keep them in a tray instead of a closed carton. Anyone think differently? Please share. I love to learn from you guys and don't want to spend money on something if it is a bad idea. I do think it will be fun to open my fridge door and be able to see my pretty eggs sitting on the shelf.
