There was no birthday present for me in the incubator this morning. Ah, well. At 5 am we were woken up by very loud peeping and got up all excited, but it was just the one egg and the chick was still stuck. I went ahead and took it out and peeled the shell and dried membrane off to free it, then put it back in the incubator. At 8 am the chick is still alive, but no other eggs have pipped.

I'm thinking of getting a little box and putting it in the incubator for the chick. It's having trouble walking on the screen, and bumping the eggs. Does this sound okay?

I'll go by Monroe F&F this morning and pick up a few of their youngest chicks. If this one makes it it'll need some buddies more its age, and if it doesn't I'd like more than one or two hens.

I imagine they are very tired.
Hard work getting out of that shell.
In fact, your post brought back a memory of one of my favorite photos from Chickielady.
Took me a bit but I found it and here it is.
CL - love this photo so much!!! So, so funny.
I'd buy the BYC calendar if they used this photo!
(I hope it's not against any rules for me to go back and find CL's photo and repost.
Someone let me know if it is...)

OK... now that I see that CL has a device to measure temp and humidity in there. I keep reading that there's supposed to be something like that in there, and I don't have anything like that - now I'm getting nervous. How do you fit something like that inside a little Brinsea Mini? I have no idea what the humidity is like in there. I just keep filling half the water cup up to the top each day. Also I read yesterday I'm supposed to be using distilled water. Did I mess up big time? I'm using tap water with the Brinsea solution.

Awww I'm sorry! I hope your little one makes it through OK. It sounds like you're doing the best you can with him/her.

Is Monroe the only place you guys know of that has/will have chicks through the next few weeks? I've been wondering where I'm going to get another chick or two if only one of mine manages to hatch.

Hmm, hope is not all gone. When I put the chick in a container, I had to move some eggs around (they had been used as soccer balls anyway) and I felt movement in them. Candled a big one and saw a beak in a very large air bubble, moving. Maybe some of them will still hatch. If the chick escapes the container (it's *very* determined) I'll have to set up a mini-brooder to let it dry off and figure out standing.

Oh, I hope more will hatch for you!!!!

Count me in. I like the 6ers. I also like the old fashioned 3x4s. (Ogress has some of those if I remember correctly.)

I'll go in on a bulk order of those cartons! They are so cute, and when all my pullets start laying, I'll be giving eggs to family and friends. Let me know when you want to order them.

So far we have HoneysuckleHills and Shyla-C going on a bulk order of the round 6 egg cartons. How many do each of you think you would want? The larger the order, the less expensive they will be.

I think I would probably only want 25 or 50 tops.

Jen, definently don't give up yet, since today is really only day 21! Another thing I do to keep the other eggs from being knocked around, is put them in an egg carton with the big end up. Use a styrofoam one if you have one to prevent it from getting wet which would add extra humidity. The chicks ma still climb all over it but at least the eggs are still and the little one can stay focused on getting out.

Monroe F&F got their last order of chicks in last Friday. They have a Facebook page you can like & they post when they get things in.

Itsren, when are your eggs due? I filled my incubator last week 42+ eggs and if all goes well, will have extras 2 wks from Saturday.

RonB, so very sorry about the missing baby! Big hugs! (I'm on my phone so the smiles don't work or I'd have many hugs posted!)
Glad to hear your vacation went well!

Does anyone in Seattle area have composting red worms to give away/sell cheap/trade for something? I thought I'd ask before ordering some.

Also looking for someone to remove sod and till my front yard. I've emailed a few people on craigslist and none of them are replying. I would like to get it done before it gets too cold or rainy..anyone know someone who you can recommend? I'm in NE Seattle.

AND...I have a source of free rockery rocks that I want to somehow get to my house. My husband and I have moved all that we can with our van, if anyone has a way of moving them and is very strong, I would gladly pay/trade something. These are large 1 man size basalt. So you would need to be strong :) They are one mile from my house.

I own two baby sling/baby carrier stores and can trade generously from there, or pay cash :)
