Howdy Stranger !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yup, the eggs are in the incubator & will keep ya posted !!!!!!!!!!

So very nice to meet Andrea, and truly happy to pass on the possibility for more Hamburgs. I'm fretting myself about the possibility that some of the eggs won't be fertile, because all four parent birds are in moult, but they're also being given every possible protein/vitamin treat in the world. (and even while moulting, I'm getting around five eggs a week each from the mighty mites)

If I set eggs on Sunday, September 23 - does that count as "day 1"? Or does Monday, September 24 count as "day 1"?

I'm trying to figure out what day I go into lockdown.... Thursday, Oct 11 or Friday, Oct 12? Anyone know for sure? Thanks!

Depends on time of day the eggs are set. Set before noon, and the 23rd would be day 1. After noon, the 24th is day 1.

It annoys me when my Belgians go nuts because a leaf fell off a tree and drifted down to land near them or a junco has just flown past them into a shrub. I keep running out there and absolutely nothing is wrong. The rooster is fine and the wild birds are singing and visiting the feeders (no small hawks around). They start screaming a few times a day and it's driving me bonkers.

Just so everyone knows... this is just a example chart... not the real colors or anything I just threw it together to show how the egg colors work.
There are so many shades that it would take me a year and professional color software to make a real egg color possible chart.

EE's are mixes will always be mixes... but if your willing to breed just for egg color it is possible to "create" a flock that will breed true to egg color.
The hardest part is to prove male egg color gene but I do know that some people have flocks that throw consistent egg color layers.

"unproven" is just another fancy word for this male is a EE/OE/etc so I think the colors will be this but I dunno....
As well as no real work in making the egg color reproducible.
The unproven are in general most EE's since there really is not a reason to create a "breed" of EE's that are specific in egg color. Some do it for hobby or egg colors to sell eggs etc but there would never be a show standard just for egg color layers.

That being said... some of us are also out to create a breed that is possible breed standards with a colored egg or specific colored egg laying.

if you set the eggs at noon on the 23rd then noon the 24th is day 1.
so like cloverleaf said before noon I count as day 1 after noon I count as day 0 but I tend to set after I get off work so set day and the next day is day 1 for me.

It wasn't amusing when it happened, but as these things go, it was about as good as it gets, unlike the time that the road contractors put down eight bales of nice first-cutting timothy for erosion control, in a dry summer like this one, and the cattle knocked down two panels of fence and were lined up out in the road as if eating from a manger.

I may even laugh at it, if I get eight hours of sleep tonight (for the first time since the equinox).

Also, amazing how very quiet it is with four fewer roosters!

Fainting at the idea of buying good hay for erosion control? Me too.

The road widening project between Martin Way and Steilecoom Road used alfalfa; it's coming up in all the cracks and in the planting strips, and my fingers itch every time we drive by: I'd love to have it to feed to the chickens!

Soon as I woke up this morning I drove up to my BF's to check on Salma the injured Welsummer. Her eye goo is about the same. I have not put any more ointment on it since I was advised that it might be the wrong thing. I could not get her to eat or drink anything, so I put her outside and she is definitely a bit more energetic than yesterday. She's not foraging or running around like usual, but instead of just staying in one spot, she's slowly following the rest of the flock around the yard. I'm not too surprised she wasn't hungry or thirsty given how much she ate and drank yesterday: she had at least a whole scrambled egg as well as some apple and a bunch of Pedialyte and water. I'm going to give her a little while longer to act like a real chicken outdoors, then try to get some more food and water in her.

Ugh, in the process of writing this I had to jump up and rescue her from our mean blue mutt, Gertrude. Salma actually lost her spot as flock leader about a month ago to Gertrude, and Gertrude has taken to mounting Salma like a rooster as a show of dominance. She does not subject anyone else in the flock to such treatment but Salma. Poor Salma was being handled pretty roughly when I finally broke it up. Clearly I need to supervise the flock whenever Salma is outdoors until she recovers. I'm so mad at Gertrude!!!

One thing I'm a bit worried about is that the Baytril we got from the neighbors was prescribed in July 2010. Does anyone have any advice about that?

Do you have some kind of crate or cage you can put Salma in? I found my Roz ate better if she were with her flock, so I put her in a dog crate. She could see her flock and be with them, but they couldn't hurt her.

Well I just skimmed through the last 150 posts and I hope I did not miss anything.

Sorry to all the people that have lost birds lately

. It really seems that these last few weeks or so have been really heavy with preditors. As you know I my self have been looseing quite a few girls and yes they alway tend to take my favorites first (kids say I am not aloud to call any my favorite untill the run I am building is finnished). Just the other day my SIL and I watched a hawk come and try to take one of my chicks, but her mom chased the hawk away and baby was hiding very well. Then Saterday I went out in the morning and one of my male turkeys was on the roof of the coop, he never goes up there unless there has been a coyote running around. So we did a head count and everyone is accounted for! Thank goodness.

As far as my flock for next year, I have decided that one breed I want is......Salmon Faverolles

I would really like to have myself about 3-4 hens and have to have myself a "Fudge" Roo!
If any one knows where I can get some hatching eggs that would be great. I know some one on here raises Faves, but I don't know how far away they are.

One other thing, I figured I would put this on here before I put it on Craigslist.
I have a clock for sale, but not just any clock this was built by a man named Jimmy Collier (this is the reason why my farm is called Collier Clocks Farm). He was an amazing man that built everything from clocks to race cars from scratch. If you do a Google search and read about him you will fall in love with him.
I have so much info on this man I could go on for ever, He is the reason that Evergreen speedway is what it is today. It used to be a dirt horse track, but Jmmy wanted a place to race his Model T and so he went to the Snohomish city councle and convinced them to turn it into a paved race track.
I would like to sell this clock to someone who will appriciate it in every way. If you want any info on the clock let me know. If not no biggy I just wanted to share it's beauty with ya'll before it goes.
