Watchdog chicken?

Has anyone had a “watchdog” chicken? I have eleven hens, they have a nice large, cozy coop with plenty of roosting space. Every night, all the hens go inside to roost except for one, the same hen every night roosts right outside the coop by herself all night. She’s the same hen who “charges” me when I go inside and occasionally pecks my legs, so I know she’s the leader of some sort. I’m a bit concerned for her because it’s starting to get cold at night! Should I be worried? Has this happened to anyone else?

If you don't have a rooster, a hen does often take the spot of flock protector. However, sleeping outside is not a part of the job description. Try removing her each night to put her on the roost with the others. She should learn eventually.
