Watched chickens for an hour today - so funny

Chicken football, I love it! I too have wondered why they don't just quietly eat their prize, instead of bragging and then (likely) losing it.

Does Des Moines allow Urban Chickens... I am from Cedar Rapids, hopefully this coming Tuesday City Council will get the third reading of the ordinance done, so we can pick up our six Buff Orpington Pullets!!!

Can't wait ~ I homeschool as well, and see this as a great tool to use for teaching responsibilty and just general education.

I've often wondered why they do the 'bawk bawk' thing...if they'd just be quiet about it, no one else would know...case closed. They are too proud of themselves to hush up!

I love watching my girls doing all of their antics.....I have a hammock close to my chicken house where I can lay and watch them. They often hop onto the hammock with me!

Agreed with everyone--chickens are so darn entertaining! If I'm ever really stressed out or upset, just sitting and watching them for a while does wonders for my mood. They really do have personalities and the way they interact can be fascinating or downright hilarious. It's always great to know I'm not alone in the enjoyment I get out of watching my chickens. They make me so happy! It's just a wonderful way to unwind.

Also, I've seen a few of my girls find special treats and be quiet about it--somehow, everyone still just knows and takes chase! It seems it's just one of those things that can't remain a secret.

that same thing happened to me! when we were puting all the chickens in the pen because it was about to rain one of them caught a frog! but insted of not sharing with the other chickens she kept running away from me like i ws going to steal the frog! Then when i cautgh her and put her in the pen she ate it whole before the other chicken could see it haha

I rescue the frog when my girls, or my cat Daisy catch one. Then I give the girls a few dried meal worms instead. The last frog was screaming for help! The frogs I put back in the pond.

This reminds me of something that happened yesterday!

I was outside talking on the phone and all my baby chicks are loose everywhere all of the sudden I see one of my chicks running around with something sticking out of it's mouth!

So I start chasing the bad lil' chick and the chick had a HUGE FROG! He was trying to eat it! This is a "Baby Chick" I cannot even believe that he could carry that thing around! Then I finally made him drop it. Then later when I was on BYC chatting my lil' brother comes up to me and says "come here!" I'm like what did I do now? Then he shows me the "frog" or what's left of it! My brother was so mad! But who cares? Just a frog right ...

The way I understand it, in Des Moines if your yard is less that one acre, you can keep up to 30 chickens, so long as they're in the back yard and at least 25 feet from neighbors - not sure if that means neighbor's yards or just their houses. We are technically not in the city of Des Moines but in a small township outside the city. Enough to be counted as a rural area, although I have neighbors on all sides in smallish yards just like any city. I'm sure they would mind if I decided to get goats or something, but so far nobody seems to mind the chickens (that might have something to do with the egg bribes).

Good luck on the upcoming ordinance changes!
