watching the mail for my chicks

We found a decent used coop on craigslist and decided it was time to try our hands at backyard chickens. Ordered two RIRs and two Buff Orpintons online. Should arrive anytime. Hope we can keep them alive and healthy!

Does anyone have experience introducing dogs to new chicks/hens? We have a feisty blue heeler that enjoys chasing birds from the feeder. Advice on training him to protect, not hunt, our new ladies would be appreciated.

Definitely be careful with dogs around chickens, no matter how sweet the dog seems. Most dogs see chickens as dinner. So you will want to follow those links that Sumi left for you.

From the new members we greet, it seems like dog + chickens = dead chickens. Some folks are on their 3rd. set of chicks and same dog. My conclusion: dogs and chickens should never meet.

Welcome! I am sure you will enjoy them. I have some RIR's and Buff Orpingtons. They should work well for you. I especially love the RIR's because they lay HUGE eggs consistently. I love my Black Sex Links as well. Good Luck!! We are here to help. BYC is a great resource!
