Water bottle gourds

We are making bird houses out of water bottle gourds. And I thought they are water bottle so why not make a water bottle. Was wondering if anyone has done this. I found a couple sites but really explain how to clean the inside. Was looking for any tips.

Cut your opening in the top. Use a stick to break pith and seeds on inside. Shake out as much as possible. Add a few small stones and start shaking gourd with a swirling motion. This will scrape and clean inside.

Thanks. I have the top off and useed a dow rod and coat hanger to clean what I could out. The stones is a brilliant idea, thanks
