Hi,

I want to process few of my chickens and want to know what is the best water heating element that I can use to boil the water to 140-150 F in a galvanized bucket. I don't want to buy a scalder because it is too expensive. I think a good portable water heating element should do the work.

Thanks,

I just use a large enameled pot on a propane burner. (same one I use for deep frying the turkey) My Grandmother just heated a big canning pot on the wood stove. On the farm for scalding hogs, they used an old cast iron bathtub with a wood fire underneath.

One of the best & cheapest way's is to use a turkey fryer set up, the stand is sturdy and will hold a bigger stronger pot if you ever wanted to up grade, it's easy to use and safe not to mention fast. I don't think a galvanized bucket is a good choice, most times if your using a high powered flame burner it can litteraly melt the bottom, just use the aluminum pot that comes with the fryer idea. You can buy used ones without the propane cylinder for dirt cheap at a variety of sourses.

Where do you get the fish fryer for $20?

You can get any kind of that stuff at, flea market's, Garage sales, Freecycle, craigslist, e-bay and all other sorts of places, just gotta keep your eyes peeled.

Yeah Jim I remember that find Erlene did do well on that one, been around a little just haven't had much to contribute to all the Foo-Foo chatter that's all.
