Water inside or outside or both?

I've seen here in a few places that most people have water for their chickens just outside in the run. Is this true? The chickens don't need water at night?

I just keep mine outside. I don't think they get up through the night.

Seems to stay cleaner in the run. No they don't need water at night. They sleep heavily.
