I have 6 waterers with nipples and 4 leak. None leaked after initial installation or even after the first few months. Then one by one they began to drip. It just so happens that its the 4 most popular ones that leak. The nipples don’t leak when installed correctly BUT the birds sure do make a mess with the VN when using them. I put HN in day one along with an open waterer and by week 2-3 you can pull the open waterer. I have VN and HN on the same buckets outdoors from spring to fall.
The HN in my coop have been in service for at least a year. May want to check them to make sure some debris did not get into where the o-ring sits to cause the leak.I have 6 waterers with nipples and 4 leak. Maybe i got a poor brand that were cheaply made or something. I also use them for birds up to 4 months in age. Maybe they cant take the abuse of larger birds. Either way, they are a headache. I use them only outside when at all.
What type of waterer do you prefer? What is easiest to maintain/fill? I will be needing to invest in waterers shortly.I have 6 waterers with nipples and 4 leak. I used 5gal buckets with lids with the nipples in the bottom. Preferably blue or black. Darker colors inhibit algea growth. Otherwise i have a gravity fed cat waterer in the coop and there are always pools of water somewhere around the farm that they find and use. What type of waterer do you prefer? If you have electricity that you can get to the coop then you are set for a waterer that can be used all winter as well as summer. I use a tote with lid. Some use buckets or jugs, or plastic barrels. Add horizontal nipples and a stock tank deicer in winter that is rated for use in plastic and your chickens have water. My system was thawed even when the temperature went down to -22 F. Of course I am lucky to have a non freezing faucet available so the waterer can be filled easily during the winter. Even if I did not it is a luxury to not have to haul water every day. My tote lasted over a week between fillings for a dozen chickens. What type of waterer do you prefer? What is easiest to maintain/fill? I will be needing to invest in waterers shortly.![]()
Thank you for the response! Yes, I do have electricity. I am converting an old milk house attached to a barn into a chicken coop. I do not have water in the barn though so I will be lugging water from our house to the coop but it is only about 30 feet away. I am very interested in the horizontal nipples as I don’t want the nipple sticking out the bottom and getting broke (my son will be helping with chicken chores). What brand horizontal nipples are decent? I was looking into purchasing the Rent-a-Coop ones and they also sell a little chick waterer but I guess I could make my own little chick waterer too.If you have electricity that you can get to the coop then you are set for a waterer that can be used all winter as well as summer.
