"Water Protector"

Hey there everyone! I have a question - Does anyone here use water protector? A solution added to the drinking water to protect against film, bad taste, etc.

I change my chickens 2 gallon drinking water everyday, but the insides still get a sort of slimy coating. I bought some solution called "Water protector" and started using it today. Is it really necessary? Should I add it to their water everyday, or once a week or so?

Some add a small amount of apple cider vinegar to the water. Perhaps for the same purpose. It may be cheaper than a commercially prepared solution.
