I use horizontal nipples in five gallon buckets. I also made a one gallon for my chick brooder.

Me too! I love the system and find the water stays very clean and the girls seem to like it!

Vertical, and no idea what size, my SO made it. Whatever it is, it's small enough to fit in a 5gal bucket

Horizontal nipples don't freeze, if you use a 250 watt stock tank deicer in your 5 gal bucket. Only 1 or 2 people had problems that I know of.

I am with @blackdog043 I use tank heaters one has a aquarium heater but never had them freeze here all kinds of issues plagued with the vertical style

Horizontal nipples, 5 gallon bucket and a 100w ceramic heat emitter.
Not a single frozen nipple all winter. Water was a constant 8-10c.
Initial testing, I was able to raise the water temp 50c above ambient temp.

Pretty basic here...fresh water every day in their waterers and waders. Clean out the waterers once a week with vinegar.
