I posted a question over a year ago and got no responses but it came up again this year.

When you find a nest and don't know for sure how long they have been there or how long a hen might have sat on them, how will they react when water tested?

For instance: what if you came upon a nest and the hen was off taking a break but the eggs had been incubating for a week or so. What would they do when you put them in water? Float? Sink? Float higher or lower than the air sack?

If I had a hen nesting for a week or so, and wanted to know if they're developing, I'd candle the eggs. I don't know if water testing is done that early in incubation. I have read about it being done at the end of the incubation period, but not the beginning.

Gah! Sometimes I'm so dumb! I read what you are talking about and wondered about this situation and totally phased out on candling them. LOL Thank you for reminding me. Sylvia
