The waterer that I was using for my chickens broke. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a good waterer? Thanks!

With our young flock we just switched over to a do it yourself watering kit; poultry nipples with 5 gal buckets. Easy to assemble and so much better at keeping the water clean. Amazon sells packets of 10, very inexpensive, and I use food grade buckets from Home Depot and a gamma lid for easy open and close.

Where are you? Will your water freeze this winter? The other thread recommended horizontal nipples in a heated waterer for winter. I just bought one.

I like using horizontal water nipples. The water stays clean. If you need a heated waterer, my article is below. If you don't need to keep your water from freezing, omit the deicer. The nipples can be used in a lot of different containers.

Brooder waterer, so the chicks get used to nipples early.

Depending on where the original poster is located, vertical nipples might not be the best choice. Vertical nipples will freeze at temperatures horizontal nipples will stay thawed.

I live near Louisville, Kentucky. So we do have to keep a deicer in our Premier chicken nipple waterer in the winter. The chicken yard is beside our barn which has electric. So my husband was easily able to run electric to the coop. That system does work fine for us. But it would be nice to not have to bother with a deicer.

I am eager to learn how horizontal nipples do not freeze. May i please ask you to explain? It would be nice to not have to bother with the deicer.

I am sorry. There was miscommunication here. What I am saying is that if you have a heated container, vertical nipples will freeze much faster than horizontal nipples. I am not saying horizontal nipples do not need a heated container. Horizontal nipples would not keep the container of water itself from freezing. Both types of nipples need heated containers when the temperatures are below freezing.

Vertical nipples have a little bit of water in them even when they are not being used. That little bit of water hanging down below the bucket is susceptible to freezing. On the other hand, horizontal nipples have an o ring that keeps water out of the nipple when not in use. Vertical nipples used in a heated container are good choices for those who live in areas that get cold, but not bitterly cold. Where I live -22 F is a normal low for winter. Vertical nipples would freeze at that temperature whereas horizontal nipples do not.
