waterer using chicken nipples

my hubby just put chicken nipples into a five gallon bucket to use to water our layers, works great, except under where hanging there is wet spot in coop from where chickens dribble water from drinking...does anyone have this problem and how did you solve it? Thanks. (the nipples aren't leaking, so that isn't the problem)

That happens to ours sometimes when they get a little over-zealous with the nipples. We have wood chips underneath and I was worried about mold and other nasties but it seems to absorb and dry alright and sometimes the chickens get interested in the spot and scratch it up (and lay in it, of course) which does serve to dry it out faster. I've never had a problem with it. If it's extreme and never dries, maybe you could put some sort of pad under there, like a door mat or something? Not sure if that works, just an idea.

We also get that small spot. In the severe heat the past week they drank more and the small spot got quite large. I put a brick on the floor under the nipple and that helps absorb the water from creeping across the floor and into the wood chip bedding. It seemed to help but I still got some water creepage. (not sure if that's a real word) I'm thinking now about putting the brick in one of my wifes tin pie pans. Hope this helps or gives you an idea or two.

Thanks, guess I was worried about mold also, but think with this heat there won't be a problem and next post (placing a brick in a pan...think I will use a boot mat ...will do the trick so our wood chips don't get slopping wet.

thanks for input, going to put a couple of bricks on a rubber mat under neath the waterer, then won't have to worry about the problem.
