Watering Cups?

You can buy all kinds of cups and nipples from ebay if you search around a little so it would be hard for us to know exactly which one you have. But as MeanV2 said, they are designed, all of them, to work with less than 5 PSi of water pressure so they will not work hooked directly to you house source of water. You either have to feed the cups from a bucket -you can put a float in one and hook that to the house- or use a inline regulator to control the pressure. Most people do it with a bucket or similar water reservoir. Most likely the ebay store where you bought the cups also has a regulator set-up for sale as well, check with them.

Personally I like using a reservoir and keeping it full as compared to using a regulator from the house water source. It just seems safer and there is less of a chance it could rupture somewhere and water run all night or a weekend when your visiting grandma. Keep searching around in this forum and you will see many different set ups and all it takes to make one work successfully is imagination and the right parts.

This is the kind of Pressure Reducing Valve, (click the link) you will need to make your system work on house pressure, the same company sells an adapter to connect directly to 1/2" PVC. The price of these two items is one reason most folks use a bucket or reservoir type system.

Yea I figured that out so i installed a bucket for now until I get a pressure valve...The ones I bought are the ones on the link in the first post in this thread...Thanks for the link on the pressure valve..

Okay- forgive me if this has been covered. Has anyone used these brass auto water cups? I like the idea that they are farm sturdy. But the truth is I only need it for 40 birds on a gravity fed system- how hard can they really peck, right?

We have the plastic cup clip on & tubing combo set up at the urban home coop, but I was concerned about being in the open at a farm where we are expanding a bit. I was thinking a 1/2" pvc line, hooked up by hose to a 50 gal. gravity fed plastic barrel. I was on the fence (hee, hee) about the type you screw in directly to the pipe, like these, or the type that comes with the bracket/ cement.

Feed back is great!
Thanks

Watering cups have been a life saver! I used the ridiculous red and white waterer from TSC that you have to flip upside down to fill everyday for a year. Now I have 4 watering cups attached to a 5 gallon pickle bucket. I was able to find the watering cups on ebay 4 cups for $11.95 with free shipping, and I was able to get a free food grade pickle bucket with lid from a local cafe. They were extremely easy to install, less than 10mins start to finish and having been preforming perfectly! My chickens learned how to drink from them right away. I removed there old waterer and they were triggering the yellow plunger for water in no time. I would absolutely recommend these to anyone looking to water some chickens and is tired of having to do so everyday. The water stays clean, last for days, and does not ever spill in our coop.

Remove all other sources of water is rule #1 that you must do to train your birds to use a new drinking system. After that simply leave a tiny drop or two of water in the cup, do not fill it up. When the birds go for that last drop of water in the cup they will hit the yellow valve and allow another drop or two to enter the cup. Sister hen will come by and get that last drop in the cup and hit the valve leaving a drop or two in the bottom, Auntie will come by and get a drop or two and leave one behind etc etc etc.

Before to long all your birds will be getting that last drop and leaving a drop for her sister. It really isn't hard to do as long as you follow rule #1 to begin with.

I put both the cups & nipples (cup-nipple-cup-nipple) on one 5 ft pipe attacked to inside of pen fed by 5 gallon bucket outside pen. They don't seem to prefer one above the other.
